As I remember about 50+ years ago I caught a steelhead full of roe. I asked a retired gent down at the baitshop what to do with it. His reply was to mix it in with Boraxo and freeze. Next time I went fishing he went with me. He took a small 1" lump of the roe Boraxo and tied it into a 2" square of pink net, hooked it onto a #6 hook and I cast it out. 30 minutes and 4 salmon later we headed back to his place. He told me Boraxo washed out and left fresh roe sent in water. I'm not sure about that, but it worked for catching trout, salmon and bass, all year round. He did caution me to watch out for the warden, said it just might be not quite legal. This was on the Mad River in Eureka.
