Nobody has ever asked me a thing about king  henry the 8th either but I don't regret learning about him. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

It is of our opinion that we should learn as much about history of all nations and cultures as possible.  The lessons we learn when studying the past often gives us insight and helps with our understanding of the present and on occasion even the future.

Why learn to read and write cursive, well that is difficult. Writting a note to a pretty girl in cursive, lets her know what kind of fella you are. (yep I read your son is 7 so you got a couple years.) It also allows the quick penning of a letter to mom while you are on deployment so your captain doesn't have to sit you down and write that letter. (yep you got a few years for that also). Also it allows you you to take some quick notes in your travel journal so your kids and grandkids can tell what lands you visited.

When he gets closer to the age where he is seeking Miss Right, if he is smart he will pen some lines in cursive to her from the Song of Solomon.  8) just my opinion and he should wait a few years for that of course.

Just like algebra, I never thought I'd need it either, but a very nice cursive note with some silly poetry really does work well.

Good for you with homeschooling!!! +1

As most of you know I homeschool my children.  My eldest son is in second grade this year and it is the year he should learn how to read and write cursive letters. We started by him learning how to read things that were written in cursive with no problems.  When it came time to learn how to write the cursive letters, he was not interested in learning one bit.  He asked me why he had to write fancy letters.  I thought about what my teacher told us in second grade about needing to learn how to write in cursive for college for papers and for writing a resume.

Evan points out to me that all of the papers that he has seen me turn in for college were typed and not written in fancy letters.  Then he asks me if you type a resume as well.  When I answered yes, he then says, "Well, Momma don't you think it would be a better idea to teach me to type instead of write fancy letters"  I personally can't think of any NEED for writing in cursive later on in life as he pointed out most things are typed.  So right now he is learning his home keys.   ;)

If anyone has a logical reason why he would need the ability to write in cursive other than his name please share!  The only argument I could come up with was 'because I said so" and I don't feel that it is fair to teach him something he won't need just because I said so!
One day he will meet a speical young lady and a typed love letter might not cut it  ;)
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

6-10 years from now?

Look at Skype, Facebook, even GBO. Extrapolate that out 6-10 years from now.
Right now, it does not sound real wholesome to say he will "meet someone on-line", but odds are, in 6-10 years, they will meet or will communicate mainly through some kind of internet community.

The kids who can communicate face-to-face as well as they can on-line will be the winners. Teach him how to sustain a face-to-face conversation, while displaying geniune interest in the person he is talking to, and cursive won't matter.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Knowledge is a good thing. It can never be taken away. That is a good reason for learning.

I do not know Heather but since she is home schooling I would bet her kids are not texting or using the computer without supervision. (+2 on home schooling) The more we invest in our kids the better off we as a society are.

As a parent you don't have to argue, Pops would use the becuase I said so line and I never liked it. Then one day he said we have to do the things we don't like to, so we can do the things we like. Education is something you may not like but you will get one and later you will thank me for it. This was one of those times he was right again.

What is the fastest thing that you can do, writing,  if a keyboard isn't available?

I'm faster with cursive than print,  unless I want  someone to be able to read it.  ;D   ear

HEATHER. I just wrote out my wifes valentine card and couldn't help but think how bland and impersonal that card would have been in block or printed letters. Teach those boys cursive. I have a grandson who did not learn cursive and he's lost with written words. Charlie.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

When I was his age we didn't have any computers or keyboards so we needed to learn all the forms of handwriting, now I'm like some of the other guys. Only thing I write in cursive anymore is my signature. My handwriting has never been pretty and many years ago I started printing everything so I could read it when it got cold. Also was a late bloomer as far as computers go, I didn't even have an email address until about 6 years ago. In todays society I'm thinking knowing the keyboard has the edge over cursive writing. If he can read it that's already great, if he takes a notion he'll learn to write it later.

I read a survey where 1/3 of the American population could not write a cursive Q or Z without having to reference it.

My daughter just showed me about a dozen different lettering fonts on the computer..... if she wants cursive she can type it on the keyboard!      I feel like an old fart.

I see this as a form of rebellion.
Heck fire--I don't even type well.
I think and admire the cursive writing of one who does it well. Envious is a good word.
Encourage, don't demand, give positive encouragement when he does it. he most likely will do it when he recieves positive reinforcement and enjoy the praise.

I honestly cannot remember the last time I wrote something in cursive other than my signature.  In fact, I can't remember the last time I even saw something that someone else wrote in cursive, other than their signature.  I do believe that cursive's time has come and gone.  Good riddance.  I could always print about as fast as I could write in cursive, and I can type about 10 times faster than I can do either.

If you really want to educate your kids well with respect to the written word, please teach them to write in complete sentences, with proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.  When I see an internet post somewhere with 200 words strung together in one "sentence" with no caps or punctuation, the impression that I get is not favorable.

Cursive will probably be lost on future generations as will sentences and spelling and punctuation. Texting and the speed it allows along with the lack of desire to perform at a higher level will assure cursive's demise. We are just getting too lazy and no one will force us to do better. We are not being trained to hold ourselves accountable. Someone else wll tend to things. ear

Seems as though we are regressing rather than progressing.
There are times when writing is necessary---grocery list, things to do, notes to the wife, well, :-[, to myownself.
Nothing carries a stronger meaning than a hand written note to a friend or loved one.
It helps when they can be read.

Not to be too argumentative, but when was the last time you read a cuneiform clay tablet?  Or a smoke signal?  Or semaphore flags?  Or received a verbal message from a human courier in lieu of a phone call or text or email?

My point is that forms of communication become obsolete as they are replaced by different--almost always superior--methods.  It's a waste of time bemoaning their loss.
