Civil War Monuments near you.
« on: February 11, 2011, 10:54:09 AM »
I though it might be interesting for people to post Civil War monuments near them.  Here is a cannon in Greendale Cemetery.   Greendale, Indiana.  The inscription reads, "Erected May 30, 1905 by the citizens and school children of Lawrenceburgh, Ind.  In memory of our departed comrades.  Huff Post No. 89.  G.A.R.

Closest to me would be a small plaque here:  Washoe House

After that, it would have to be Alcatraz Island and the various forts in San Francisco.

Got a civil war iron furnace in our subdivision.

Subdivision & elementary school are named Cherokee Bend, with streets named after battles: Shiloh, Sharpsburg, Harpers Ferry, Antietam, etc.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Having been born in Brunswick and raised in Macon and Savannah. For the last 30 or so years also working in and between these two great Ga. cities there is history all around me.

Most of the sites listed in the following links have been seen by me at the very least once and the ones in Macon and Savannah are seen all the time.

I would invite ya'll to come and enjoy a truly wonderful city in Savannah if you ever get the chance. As a Southern port city it has no equal, Charlston's Battery may come close but not the City as a whole. Thankfully Savannah was spared by Sherman thus there are many fine pre war Houses and sites.

I live 2 miles west of Kennesaw Mountain and a mile and a half east of where Gen. L. Polk was killed.  The whole area is a monument!  Back in the day, can't do it anymore, a friend, now long departed, and I charged our horses up a slope to yankee earthworks and cannon emplacements.  I tell ya, I wouldn't want to have done that for real!  Even on a horse let alone on foot like they did!

Leonidas Polk.  He married John Hunt Morgan.  I think he was a better bishop than general.  Read about his exploits at Perryville, KY. There are some Polks around here that are related to Gen. Polk.

Garnettsville cemetary near Ft Knox has several civil war dead from both sides. Several x a year we take flowers to 2 graves, one from each side. Morgan stayed the night at Garnettsville the night before he crossed into Indiana from Brandenburg not far from here, 10 miles. An old hotel still stands from the battle from union gunboats to try to stop him, the hotel took a hit from one of the gunboats. Morgan had stationed cannos on the hills high above the river and drove the gunboats away. I love civil war history. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

:) Howdy! The last surviving Civil War soldier is buried near Franklin, TX about 30 miles from where I live. His name was Walter Williams. He was promoted to Brigadier General by President Eisenhower. General Williams died in 1959.

The Civil war elements on Alcatraz have been largely obliterated by the prison. The one you want to visit in San Francisco is Fort Point. You  may have to dodge a jumper.

I live near Richmond , Lee's retreat came by close to where I live . I grew up near the south side of the James river across the river was some of the battle fields like Cold Harbor , Seven pines etc. The Iron works where cannons were made were in walking distance .In my teens we live near where a cannon had been left in the woods protecting an approach to Richmond from Bon Air , someone got it as housing invaded the area.  There are hundreds of Monuments that were erected , there are thousands of monuments that mark graves and the remains of trenches and gun placements litter the land still. There is a church near where I once fished that still had a cannon ball in the front wall. As we build here we still find bullets , pcs of cannon balls , swords and knives and rifles that were lost and covered up with dirt. There is a place near Blackstone where union troops boraded the train for the trip home, they dumped tons of bullets out of ammo boxes after a heavy rain people said they could pick them up by the handfull.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

There is about a 60 monument of a Confederate Soldier on our court house lawn, and other granite a marble monuments around the same lawn. Regardless of direction in my area there are Confederate monuments on all the court house lawns. Gratefully not one single one of that SOB Socialist Abraham Lincoln. Everytime a new Confederate grave is found and identified, the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy organizations erect a new Tombstone if needed, and do so in full Confederate Uniform, and women's dress of the period. A 21 gun salute is give, prayer, and Dixie is played. To watch is an erie step back in time. I was lucky enough to take Dad to one in the old Cannon Cemetary east of Van Alstyne Texas. In your minds eye, you could see the buggies sitting here and there, and horses quitely waiting.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett
