Tikka or Savage?
« on: February 12, 2011, 09:19:33 AM »
I first apologize if this topic was asked before.  I am ready to buy- Tikka t3 lite 308 OR  savage 16 FLHSS 308. Mostly deer hunting, target shooting 400 yds or less. I do not reload. Am looking for the rifle I do not have to change stocks, barrels. triggers etc. I just want to shoot it as-is not have to tinker with it. I have read some Savages are great out of the box, some not so great. Is this just a either or,  maybe I am making this more complicated then it really is??   Thank you in advance.

I have owned a Tikka t3 lite for 7 yrs and could not recommend it more highly. The trigger is adjustable and breaks clean. The bolt travels as if it were on ball bearings. I think the composite stock is of higher quality than those on the Savage rifles I have handled. I shoot a 300WM and with 180gr Corelok ammo it is an honest 1 MOA shooter. It is light and is not particularly comfortable to shoot, the plastic mags are $60 +/-.

I think that if you get a Savage with the accutrigger it will be a shooter. Those previous to that had poorer triggers and may be the cause of poor accuracy rumours you have heard.

The two you have chosen are generally regarded as bang for the buck leaders. In my opinion the Tikka is a better looking design, and seems to be sleeker everywhere. The Savage can do about anything the Tikka can do and cost less doing it.

Pick up the savage ,and cock the action no matter what trigger it has , then do the same with the tikka .
Don't care for the heavy bolt lift while the Savage trys to cock on opening . I find you need to drop it off your shoulder , then slap the bottom of the bolt handle  with an open palm to clear the spend round and reload.

Now once loaded - they both shoot !!

The tikka is about the slickist action I have used . I have two . One for Hunting and the other - well -- just in case the other gets lonesome . Never needed more than one gun to hunt , but been told the guy with the most toys "Wins " ;D

I have Remingtons, Rugers, and 1 Tikka T3 in 7-08. My go to rifle is the Tikka. The 308's and 6MM all set in the safe now. I had the Tikka cut back to 18" and no difference. But the fall of 2011 will see me with a savage 99 in 250-3000, and also the tikka at times.

I've been a Savage fan for many years. They are fine rifles and I highly reccomend them. However,Since December I have a new SS T-3.It is a marvelouse action.Much slicker than the Savage and far me,the stock just feels better. The Tikka also seems to carry a little better. For what you asked,no reloads,no tinkering,I'd have to say you can't go wrong either way but I'll give a slight edge to the Tikka.

The Tikka short calibers have a bolt stop in the standard action. With the extremely smooth bolt it is probably as fast as any true short action. I've had four 308's and the Tikka is the most accurate, reliable and consistant shooter. I traded a Savage FSS 16 in 308 for the Tikka. The Savage was nice but had the lousy plastic stock which has to be babied when actually hunting ( as in how to hold so as not to flex during the shot ) The Tikka is not so fussy and is just a solid hunter.

The Tikka will be lighter so if that is a factor get the tikka.  I have 3 tikka's and they have a lot smoother action than any savage.  Accuracy on all 3 are moa or better-most better.  There's nothing I can really say bad about them.  Great rifles.  The savage should have great accuracy but are heavier and the action isn't as smooth.  Tikka has a great adjustable trigger as should your savage with the accu-trigger.

If ya go with a Savage I strongly suggest getting one with either the wood or accustock.

As a lefty I went shopping for the first time in about 12 years for a new bolt rifle. Nothing wrong with my Remington 700 LH rebarrled to .300WSM, it has a parked finish and a nice laminated stock built by McGowwen when Harry had it in Illinois. Ive always been a great fan of the short action and  the .308 round. I was looking for a no frills utlity rifle in a common chambering that was easy on the wallet as well as the sholder(dont hand load either). End result I got a Savage FLHSS in .308 and had a new Redfield 3x9 40mm mounted on it. Its also the only version that has the Accu-stock and Accu-trigger which I wanted.

I handled both and agree that the action on the Tikka is much smoother but I had shot a few Savages with Accu-triggers and was pretty impressed. Accuracy has alwasy been good with any of the newer Savages Ive shot so I was willing to live with the stiff bolt lift.  For the most part I shoot either Remington core-lokt or Winchester power points and all at around 1 to 1 1/2 inches at 100yds off the bench. If I shoot off hand(hunting situations) they consistantly open up to 1.5 inches or so, but I know that its me not the rifle. Ive tried some premium loads but the diffrence doesnt justify the cost to me.

Yes the Savage comp. stock leaves a bit to be desired but it does not effect my shooting to any great extent. All in I have a bout $850.00 into it.  I took 3 deer with it last fall at  50, 80 and about 110 yds. Both the rifle and I did our job well. It is a solid, no frills, dependable rig.  I like it enough to currently be in the market for an identical set up in .223 or .22-250 for varmints OR move up to the 116 LHVSS and have them cut the barrel to .35Whelen.
Remington model 700 .300WSM, Winchester M-1 Garand 43' .30-06, Inland M-1 Carbine 44' .30 carb, Savage 16LHSS .308Win, Ithaca 16ga, 12ga, 20ga, US&S 43' 1911-A1, S&W 5906, S&W J-frame, among others...

savage is great (and probably cheaper)... but I would pick the tikka just because (to me at least) its light models (especially in stainless) are very nice looking and with the 308 round, your looking at a 6-6.5 lbs rifle... I don't think the savage is that light.

As far as out-of-box accuracy, most modern rifles are made to shoot very well, so... I don't think this is a good point of comparison, I think you should look at other factors (like weight, others suggest the feel of the gun, and optics mounts... tikka provides its own rings).

I am actually in the process of convincing myself that I have money (by the way, Im broke) and that I need to buy a new rifle (I don't "need"... I just want one).... The topic of my mental debate is tikka laminate stock vs tikka light stainless.... caliber 7mm mag vs 270 wsm.
