Wolf shot across the road.
« on: February 12, 2011, 11:15:07 AM »
Yoohoo, Tim.  If ya wanna bump this over to the Michigan Forum, go ahead, but nobody reads it.  Patty plays in the "Mud Hole Band" on Friday nights and just got home at close to 11 last night and met up with a DNR Officer in the driveway. I didn't know who until today....Mike Hamil. a superior person.  Mike is what Conservation Officers should be nation wide.

Anyhow, someone drove down the road, probably around 9 pm, had a wolf cross the road  from my south forty and plinked it with something like a .223 or a .22-250.  They, he, she, or it, then took it about 8 miles north and put it on the state highway, I would guess in an attempt to make it look like a road kill.

I was asleep in bed at the time.  I had an injection in my left eye yesterday afternoon and was in a lot of pain, so I turned in early.  I never heard the shot.  A buddy of Mikes found the wolf and called mike.  Mike said when he got there the wound wasn't 20 minutes old.

I've had no word if they know who did it, but the only thing that bothers me is it happened at my home,  I don't break the law in any way, but I told Mike, as I have his former boss, if wolves threaten my critters, they're dead and I'll tell them and then waltz through the motions.  A man's got a right to protect what is his.  I haven't been bothered, and did not, and had no reason to kill this wolf.

It was in retrospect kinda' dumb of them to dump it on the road.  If they had ditched it in the woods the critter's would have eaten it.  If they had buried it, it might not have been found.  By doing what they did, they started an investigation.  Some of those game officials are pretty sharp lawmen....

Why would anyone bother to haul it off is what don't make sense especially if it was shot from the road and not on their property?

Would have been better had they just left it lay and let the critters take care of it, and why would they care who found it and where?.......Unlesssss :-\

No. Tom I don't walk in my sleep.....that i know of.  This guy, Mike Hamil is one hell of a Conservation Officer.  He's fair, open, trustworthy honest and works with you.  There's no finer man in Michigan.  Before Mike joined, Allen Marble was in charge of Newberry DNR Law Enforecement.  He went on to be State Director and then retired.  He was the same quality man as Mike, and I hope Mike can climb as far.  It is very special to know dedicated people are working WITH you.  The DNR and I have worked together for 20 years.  I try to help, and don't break the law.

Thanks about the eye.  I'll let you know.  Yes, this Lawman that's on this wolf killing is a VERY astute boy.  It may sound silly, but I'm very proud of him.  He's very tactfull, but efficienet at the same time.  I respect quality people who do their jobs well.

Pete

The only alternative for them to dispose of the wolf would have been to ditch it in the woods.  You couldn't bury it here if you had a backhoe.  The ground's frozen solid.

And here I sit with two (2009 and 2010) unfilled Idaho Grey Wolf tags!  Best I could hope for here is to find one o' them "well fed coyotes", and hope the bullet passed clear through.
Idaho F&G has a forensics lab that is better than the Idaho State Police!  If there's any evidence left at all on the carcass, them boys and girls have been finding it.
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

"Idaho F&G has a forensics lab that is better than the Idaho State Police!"

I thought I heard on the news that 70% of the murders are not solved in Michigan.  Maybe the resources would be better spent there than a who dunnit on dead wolf.  It is against the law to shoot a wolf but if there was a wolf season to keep the critters in check there might be less of this sort of thing happening.

Criminals is generally dumb, at least the ones we HEAR about. Otherwise we wouldn't hear anything!!!  ;) ;)

I highlighted your post Ben about just leaving the carcass. Now, I confess I don't know wolves, but coyotes that I have left seem to be claimed by only bugs and birds. Nothing else will touch them. Drop a deer and let it sit overnight and you will likely find it with the Ahole eaten out or a coyote will claim it. Up north a black bear has taken my/our deer a number of times. But funny how nothing will touch a coyote carcass, I'm assuming the same for the wolf...

It is bothersome to hear this Pete. I know how annoying it can be. We have property in upstate NY and this kind of thing happens all the time, only not wolves. They shoot the deer right out of the car!

Yeh, I wonder too how they backtracked it.  I have no love for wolves and am glad one more is gone.  But to shoot one on someone elses property is stupid and disrespectful of the property owner.

It is nice to hear that there are some DNR people that have common sense.  I think a lot of the younger ones went to "stupid school".

I don't know, but if it was collared or implanted, they could possibly backtrack it.  I forgot to ask Mike how they knew, but he told me the exact spot.  It was shot on the road and then ran 30 yards east.  He said it looked like a .22-250 or another small caliber through the shoulders.  He said they transported it in a pickup, and I don't know how they know that either.  I guess the bottom line is, if these DNR guys are this good......I aint violating.....I aint killing a mouse out of season.

Mike gave me his cell number and said to call him Monday for an update, to see if they have more information.  It seems to me whoever did the shooting left a pretty good trail and it won't surprise me if they catch the person.

Where the wolf crossed is a major wolf trail.  They cross there all the time.  It's about 300 yards off my back porch.  My horses are nervous and jerky when the wolves are around, but so far they haven't tried an attack on the ponies.

Lloyd, I've got a pact with the wolves.  Don't bother me and I won't bother you.  The minute they do, a rifle will fire and the DNR will get a call.   The DNR knows this.  They've been here, been told, seen the dogs, horses, etc.  They've seen the guns.  They know the wolves traffic pattern.  The second phone call will be to the best attorney I can find.  A man's got a right to defend his property, family and friends.  My critters are all of that.

ihookem, They haven't charged anyone that I know of.

I guess one of the things that ticks me off is that I can go 75 miles to Ontario and hunt them.  One of my gun cabinets stands at the back door.  In it are .223, .22-250, 7mm-08, 7.62x39, .308, 30-06, .30-30, .445, .45-70, .357 Max and 500 S&W........all are loaded.  Oh, I forgot to mention a few loaded shotguns are there too.

I don't have tiny folks with tinkering fingers about, so all my guns are loaded and unlocked.  An unloaded gun is no more than a canoe paddle or a baseball bat.  Many times over the years one has jumped into my hands and taken out a varmint off the back porch.  I didn't run around trying to find the ammo.
