98 Krag
« on: February 12, 2011, 03:48:38 PM »
Just picked up a 98 krag full military dress.  The guy I bought it from stripped down all the parts except the receiver, polished and reblued and fitted a new stock.
No wear shows on the muzzle.  Bore is kinda dark but really strong sharp rifling.  Need to load some rounds and head for the range.

Whats up with the lack of 30-40 brass these days.  Everybody out there thing they are TR going up San Juan Hill??

Picked up a Krag Bayonet and Scabbard from 2 different sources as well.

Congrats on the Krag, you will love her.  I have a beautiful Krag sporter done in '66 and also an original with correct bayonet.  Here is a pic of my sporter:

Great cartridge & rifle.  They are good shooters.

30-40 brass is a "seasonal" item, as alot of the less popular brass is. Only made one time a year I was told. Loaded ammo is usually available.

It is for sale at times on some of the sites like this by individuals.

The Krag makes a great cast bullet rifle. Make sure you slug the bore and check the throat dimensions.

Tail of woe.  tried 30 30 cast bullets both Hard Cast and Bear Creak Moly.  Could not reliably hit a NRA High Power Standard 100 yard reduced target at 25 yards (whole target not repair center).  Got slightly irritated and rather than try to make a pig sing ordered a new barrel from CMP.

Will cost me the same as the cost of the barrel to get it blued, mounted, finished chambered and the sights transfered.  Is a Krieger new criterion button rifled barrel.  Should shoot really well when it comes home.

didlyv did you slug your bore to see if it was oversized?  I did and my sporter measures .311.  Still shoots 200 gn jacketed RN bullets decently but doesn't like 180 SPs.  Like you I may just rebarrel someday rather than looking for oversized cast bullets for it.

Thanks Barstooler.  I wish I could claim credit but I was only six years old when it was sporterized.  The only reason I know this is the 'smith marked inside the stock which I discovered when I took the action out to polish the surfaces.

When I had my Krag done, my smith discarded the sewer pipe barrel and redid an almost new Browning tube taken off a B-78. This saved me considerable cash, and in turn have a great tube. Mine shoots cast like a house afire. Matter of fact, that is about all I use. I will try to post some pics Saturday.

Krag came home thursday.  Took to range Sunday 210 grain LRN .309 and .310 GC from montana bullet works
In .309 loaded 26.5, 27, 27.5, 27.8 and 28 grain 5744 and just 28 grain in .310
Ist rounds at 25 yards with the 26.5 1st 2 in same hole, 3 1.5 in left 4 about 1 calibers worth of paper between it at the big hole at 3 ocloc and 5th about 1 caliber of paper at 6 O'clock.  Group about 1inch high of point of aim at about 1.5 inchse right using 100 yard sight setting

Switched to 100.   group about 3 inches higher than point of aim at 100.  Did not seem to matter what charge was.  3 rounds close together one a little off and 1 bad shot (if front sight got really fuzzy bullet was kinda address to whom it may concern and would be 3 or 4 inches out.  About the same with all .309 loads.

Moved out 200 Used 200 yard line at front of rear sight with sight in down psn. o 1st two rounds about 2 inches apart and probably 15 inches high  Slid the sight back about 1/4 way between 200 and 100.  Group centered just below 10 ring of std 200 yard military bull.  Thru 1 in 8 ring about 3/4 inch out of black at 430.  Rest 60 / 40 9 & 10 respective ly with 1 pinwheel X.  Overall about 8 inch group.  When sight was clear and distinct got 4 shots about 2 inches wide at 6 oclock about 1/2 inch below 10 ring in an almost straight horizontal line.

Conclusion rifle will shoot.  Does not seem to care about load within reason with 5744.  Also does not seem to care if bullets are .309 or .310.

Will play some more with this and also try varget and 4350.

Bottom line if I do shoot it at winter range military rifle long range I will own any misses and cannot blame rifle or loads.
