Barrel movement fix
« on: February 13, 2011, 03:16:45 AM »
I have 4 Handis now and 3 of them have great lock up, no barrel movement of any kind. The 4th one has a little side to side movement only with the forend off. I tried the fix method adding a shim made of pop can material, very thin aluminum but with it on you cannot get the gun to lock up barrel to receiver. This is the gun that is least accurate of them so I think this lateral movement is the cause. What should I try next?

thanks,

Joe

I added a photo to one of the fixes I used, and here's a link to another that I used for the same problem.

I basically used a .001 shim from a feeler gauge set instead of the much thicker pop can. This past year I have experimented with cutting a longer and wider piece of shim to fit the hinge pin itself, rolling it over a sharp edge to get it to take on a round shape, instead of trying to glue one on the underlug.
It works great, the only trouble is remembering it's there, removing, replaceing when swapping barrels.

That's the exact way I do mine necchi!

I did it on my .243 ultra that has just the ever so slight amount of play and it locks up tight as a drum and shoots great.

Doing it that way you don't have to tamper with the lug radius at all and it doesn't take away from the value of your barrel should you want to sell it later.

I just never did like to mess up a lug with preperation trying to get the epoxy to adhere and using the stainless to make a roll shim around the pin isn't going to move or go anywhere, and you can make different thicknesses until you find the correct one that works the best.

Having a few extras lying around is nice also when you get another barrel you can see if you already have one made up that will work, and most of the time you will.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I want to try the shim made out of feeler gauge next.
This is on a factory matched barrel-receiver in 243 Win.
This was my 1st handi rifle and I never got it to shoot very well. I only realized the difference when I purchased the others and felt the tight lockup and saw the accuracy potential in these other guns-Sidekick ML, slug shotgun Pardner not a rifled barrel either.  The 270 Win I assembled from parts but it locks up tight as a drum and I anticipate good accuracy with it too.

As John hinted at, if it's factory fitted, it can always go back to the factory for repair, on their dime if you ask.  ;)
