what gun for hunting....
« on: February 13, 2011, 05:12:08 AM »
I just took my pistol permit papers down the other day, in my county it will take betweek 6-10 MONTHS to receive my permit but.... I plan on getting a .22 to shoot targets with but I also want a handgun to hunt deer with.. I hunt a very small plot with another guy. Its about 200 yards wide and 150 yards deep. He usually sits in the bottom and covers anything that comes between there and the middle of the hill and I sit on top and cover anything up top or the middle of the hill. We do very well and both shoot deer every year. My question is what caliber/model handgun would you guys suggest, would like to keep to the slower calibers since we are kinda close. I need something with alot of power because if they jump the barbed wire fence the neighbor will not allow us to retrieve them.

What communist state are you in that requires pistol permits and it takes over half a year to get them approved? As far as what caliber ang gun is right for you there are many factors like comfort level, experience, etc. Folks here have used about everything from a .38 to a .500.

Yep, that's one of the problems with good ol neu yawk.  The authority to issue handgun permits rests with the individual county and sitting judges, which is why upstaters cannot carry where they most need to, nyc, but nyc can carry upstate.  Some of the more progressive judges believe in 'shall issue' but to many of the issuing police authorities that means little more than 'drag it out until you absolutely have to issue or see if the guy/gal screws up during the prolonged wait so they don't have to issue'.  Yes, it is true that while most of the individual patrol vehicles contain sufficient computer technology to determine if you have a criminal past,  a warrant out for your arrest, a possible mental health history,  might be a war criminal or mass murderer, you still need to cool your unarmed butt for as long as they want until they feel you should are 'ready for your permit.  Unfortunately, this state will probably never have a 'shall issue' governor so we just have to contend with it, or revolt.

The best pistol for your deer hunting situation would be a Contender or an Encore. Once you are deemed worthy by the powers that be to purchase a pistol you can get a Contender or Encore FRAME which has the serial number on it that is deemed a pistol even if it does not have a barrel on it. You can then get all the barrels you want to change calibers without having to jump through hoops again to get a permit to purchase another pistol. A Contender in 30-30 Winchester with a 14" barrel would do you very well. It does not have as much recoil as a 44 mag. If you are limited to a straight wall "pistol" caliber go with the 357 maximum. THEN you must learn how to really shoot well. It is all about placing the proper bullet in the proper place that kills game in their tracks. I have killed well over 200 deer in my life. I can tell you that the best and easiest shot for killing deer in their tracks is a center of the front shoulder shot. I always try to go in or exit a shoulder and most of the time they drop in their tracks or do not go very far.

Myself I would move to another state. I will not even visit another state that will not allow me to carry my gun in it. If they don't want my gun in their state then they don't get  my hard earned money.

There are a million answers to this question...LOL.  But a Contender/Encore or a good revolver will do the trick.  The caliber depends on shot distance and whether you reload or not.  A 357 maximum or 445 Supermag may be a great rounds, but your not likely to find these rounds on the shelf of your local sporting goods store.  I own 2- 445 Supermags, 1 Contender and 1 Dan Wesson, but I reload and treat the brass like gold, as it is not the easiest to come by.  I shoot 44 mags out of them in the off season.  I would personally recommend a 44 mag in a 14 inch Contender/Encore or a good revolver(Dan Wesson, S&W, Ruger, etc) with a 6-8 inch barrel.  The 44 mag used to be the big dog 5 decades ago, but it is middle of the road now days with all the big cals out now(454 Casull, 480 Ruger, 460 S&W, 500 S&W, etc.)  The good thing is there are mild to wild loadings for this caliber which makes it manageable to shoot for most shooters. Another good thing about the 44mag, as long as you make a good shot(shoulder, chest, vitals), it will drop a deer in a heartbeat,

If you can use bottle neck cartridges, there's a bunch of good ones for the Contender/Encore.  But for straight walled, the 44 mag is probably still the most popular, and ammo can be found at any place that sells ammo.....
