Okay SB1 modification question
« on: February 14, 2011, 04:44:33 AM »
I have a SB1 12 Ga and I would like to turn it into a 12 ga muzzleloading shotgun.  Anyone done this?  Any suggestions?

I have access to a mill, a lathe and welding equipment.

Slufoot and Jedman have made 45-70 muzzleloaders out of regular handi barrels. It's not exactly the same thing but their methods would probably work on a shotgun barrel. Do a search for their posts and check out how they did it. The barrels that Slufoot makes are really slick. ;)

I had a 45/70 Shikari and converted that to a muzzle loader by tapping the chamber and adding a 209 breechplug.  It works great.  The metal was there to tap......  on a 12 ga I would have to make an insert and then have the insert tapped.

I knew a fellow who turned a nice snug 'false shell' with a recess in the head D/Ted for a percussion nipple so it sat right to get popped by the firing pin. The thick walled shell also was a length to fill the specific chamber with a powder chamber to hold a specific amount of black powder, the wads and shot then sitting atop the works. I dont remember if he made an o-ring groove on the OD too. I think he carried a decent sized dowel as a loading rod since you cant make the rod run down through the forearm mount.
He would load it as a muzzle loader and only cap once loaded, and only remove the 'shell' to clean.

Yes, that was one of the ideas I was considering too.  Now I am thinking hard about it.  Thanks, that is actually what I needed to hear.

I have heard of guys using cut off high brass hulls. If you had several you could have them primed and ready .Instead of having to punch out the primer every shot. Kurt
