Mazda/Ranger idle question
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:58:31 AM »
I have a 1998 Mazda B3000.  It's the same as the Ford Ranger.  3.0 V6, 4x4, 5-speed.  140,000 miles and very clean.  Runs great but there is an issue that is bugging me.  Say I'm putting along running 2000 rpm.  When I push in the clutch or shift into neutral, the rpm's don't drop.  In fact they won't drop until the truck comes to a stop and then they drop very slowly.  They won't drop to what I consider an idle range (700-800 rpm) until the truck sits for about 20-30 seconds.  They will drop from 2k to 1500 and then slowly back off to 1k.  After a bit they will drop to 700-800. RPM's then stabilize and it idles smoothly with no surging.  The clutch seems to be fully disengaging, there is no tendency to move at all in neutral or with the clutch pushed in.  Do I have a problem of some kind?  Any ideas?  Every standard tranny car or truck that I've ever had would immediatly drop rpm's when the clutch was pushed in or the gear selector was in neutral.

thanks,
NBH

still having this issue??  Normal for the 3.8 V6, and some of the 4 cyl trucks.  The 4.0 SOHC does this as well, but to a lesser degree than you describe.

Sounds like a faulty idle control solenoid. My son's 94 4 banger has the same issue. We have not replaced it yet but I think the part ran around a $100 or so. It looked fairly easy to get to on the 4 but can't say on a V6.

probably the right answer. Find your idle air control solonoid. On most vehicles it can be taken out and cleaned. If not just replace it.
