Need help with optics/rings for 45-70
« on: February 14, 2011, 08:55:53 AM »
I just bought a Banner 1.5-4.5x32 for my Handi in 45-70. I would like to use Burris zee rings but not sure which height I will need. Tim, I saw a few yrs ago you had this very same scope set up for your 45-70. Which rings and what size did you use.

I do have a hammer spur installed.

Thanks  :)

You'll need high rings if you don't bob the hammer, medium if you do.

Thanks Tim!

Since you have both, do you prefer the high or Med ring setup?

I like scopes as low as I can get them.

+1 on that, you gotta be able to anchor your cheek on the stock comb to be consistent.

I agree with that. Now I need to find someone to bob the hammer for me as I do not have a drill press  :-[

You don't need a drill press to bob a hammer, a dremel or file will for fine.

You can do a bunch of reshaping right on the gun, just tape up around the entrypoints and tape some padding down over the action in case you take a slip with Dremel or file. When done vac it off, pull the tape and youre good to go.

I've got a pair of Burris Zee Rings, and can't them to go in the weaver mount that came on the Handi, so I had to buy another set. I am not real happy about it.

Try using a flat head screw driver and in the bottom part of the base the is a slot, pry it just a little to open up the overall width of the base.

Thanks for the help. I am going to get the dremel out this weekend.

I bought a Ironsighter base model # IR-NEF M and didnt need to bob the hammer or use High rings, really happy I didn't have to alter anything or use high rings,  Med fits perfect.
