VERY SAD NEWS
« on: February 14, 2011, 03:08:29 PM »
I was told today that El Caz 66 has passed away. This shocking news is a Very Sad Day for many;  for the Black Powder Community, for the GBO Black Powder Forums and most of all for his Wife Susan and their children. Healthy, no illness, 48 years old, Ed died unexpectedly of a heart attack. May he Rest in Peace. His Spirit will remain.

I am in total shock.
I have communicated with him in PM's many, many times very recently.
My heart goes out to his family.

Goodbye for now, El Caz.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

This is a YouTube link that shows El Caz firing a Memorial Day salute with his "Howie" in 2009. His laughter and the 'sorry' that you hear at the very end of the vid are due to the fact that his mother had just walked out of the house at the very moment the cannon popped, and it scared the heck out of her. I'm going to miss him.

I remember Ed was my first customer from Graybeards forum.  He ordered a 1/6 scale carriage from me for a barrel he had.  This was in early 2006.  Since that time he had purchased from me a very large collection of small cannon and mortars. In those early days, I don't think a month went by without getting an email or PM from El Caz. I remember some of those orders being very challenging as he would find a picture of some unusual looking piece of ordinance and I would get an email asking "can you build it?"  I could never say no to him as he was a great guy to work with.  If he wasn't happy with something on a cannon/mortar [there were a few]  he was diplomatic in how he handled the situation and even for this reason alone the world will be a emptier place without him.  I guess it's only after someone's gone when one realizes the full impact of that person's character.  For me, it was an honor and privilege to have known him and be a part of his much too short life.  Dom

Here are some pictures of the carriage I just finished for El Cazador's SAMCC barrel by "Brooks USA".  He received the carriage in the mail 2 days before his death.  He never got the chance to enjoy it.
El Caz leaves behind, among other things, a legacy of artillery pieces.  I hope that they can find their way into hands that will appreciate them as much as he did.
He is sorely missed.

In my family, we say, "If it doesn't eat; keep it".

My wife says, "That's the Polish half".

My point is, that I seem to remember his telling me that he has a son. The son who may carry on. Also, a daughter who may marry some day, to a man who will take-up our hobby.

Maybe?

It would be nice to think that since the artillery was part of him, he will linger with his family in his guns' smoke. They may smile when one of his pieces roar and his neighbours roll their eyes.

Me?  I once told MY daughter, "Take a look around you Jen. This is your inheritance".  She replied, "What inheritance?  I'm going to pile it on you chest and burn you like a Viking with it".

Let's hope his dreams can remain with the family.

It's good to be back, don't get much time to spend here.  I have not talked to Wes for quite awhile.  I need to talk to him though.
I am not getting the time I need to building Cannons.  Right now I am building myself a house, doing it all by myself, then back to Cannon building, and doing my part to keep our history alive.
It's sad to come back and fine out we have lost a friend, and yes way too young.

Zulu,

Ed emailed me that he had recieved this carriage and that he was very pleased. He hadn't recieved the Garison carriage that you built for him awhile age. That and the first 69 Cal SAMCC that I have built got to him too late. His widow, Susan said that his son would open it and that his collection would stay in the family. The muzzle on the SAMCC was stamped EL CAZ 66 NYC No. 01. Certainly fitting for our friend Ed Soto No. 01 NYC.  These are file photos, the quality is not up to par and no pwder can.
