500 S&W rear sights

What would you recommend as replacement sights? I don't think the cheapo factory plastic will last very long ;)

Mine didn't.....They sent a replacement and those were shot shortly too. If you make adjustments that little screw just won't hold up on the plastic. I just went with a scope. Would like a nice set of sights though.

A rear mounted peep would be an option as would just scoping it.

Most will scope it.

My brass, bullets and dies arrived yesterday, a compact 3-9x50 and rail should be here today and the junk plastic sights will be history.  The  amazing thing though is that I can actually see them.

Of course I would recommend our NDS-38 peep sight.  ;)

Wow Mike, nice looking peep. What is the I.D. of the peep? Any plans to thread it to accept Williams inserts?

I agree Mike, way better option than an open rear. FWIW, after messing about with various size inserts and an adjustable Merit eyepiece I would rather just have what youve got there for a hunting gun. The original Lyman and Marbles were fixed and did the job quite nicely.
What have you got on those pictured for front sights?

The plastic sights are pure-o-d junk. My rear sight could not be tightened enough to stay in place, even with light loads. The front sight was mounted at an angle that showed both the rear view and the side of the sight. The maker is doing themselves a great disservice by handicapping a good gun with unusable sights.

I paid the big bucks and put a Williams target Foolproof sight with a Merit adjustable eyepiece on the rear and a Lyman #77 aperture sight on the front. Accuracy improved a lot.

I don't care for the rear sight position as the sight overhangs the breech and makes removal of the fired cases challenging.

I'm going to make a new base for the sight to raise it for use with a Lyman #93 front so I will move the rear sight forward at the same time.

I've had quite a bit of fun shooting the Lee 440gr cast bullet over a case full of Hogdon's Triple 7 powder.

Ive had that rear sight on a 38-55TM and it is a dandy if you are using the rifle for target work, but for hunting and field Mike's sight above, the Skinner or the WGRS would be my choice. Also, a hooded globe up front just doesnt work for me (I lose the front sight in shaddows) so I was out of luck.
Just my experience pitched out for consideration.........

I agree with the others, a good peep sight is hard to beat. I like them with a good (non-plastic) fiber-optic front sight.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Thanks for the responses. I may end up just mounting a scope in the meantime. I have an older 4x Leupold that is not being used.

Thats what is sweet about the Handi platform; at least we can get 'something' for sighting up and running while working out the details. Other than muzzleloaders Ive never had a cartridge rifle that was so agreeable to mess about with.
