 From Outdoor Life, June 2008;

Outdoor Life - Gun Test 2008

'For the first time since we began doing our annual gun test, a single rifle has won both the Editor's Choice and Great Buy awards. So how did it do it? With its gleaming stainless-steel action and barrel and a laminated hardwood stock that echoes the sculpting of legendary stock-stylist Reinhart Fajen, the MK II certainly looks considerably more upscale than its price tag indicates. But good value alone doesn't win Outdoor Life's top award. To do so, a firearm must exhibit a level of performance consistently better than that of other guns in its class. The Savage MK II .22 RF we tested proved to be not just the most accurate rimfire we tested this year, but the most accurate rimfire we've ever tested, including some high-dollar rifles of exalted European origin.

After the gun was sighted-in at 50 yards in a test tunnel, the first four 5-shot groups measured .191, .202, .263 and .260 inches, for an average of .229 inches. Yep, that's less than a quarter-inch! More remarkable is the fact that these tiny groups were fired with standard Remington/Eley ammo and an old lot of CCI Green Tag, neither of which are considered the ne plus ultra by accuracy fanatics. The smallest group of all was fired by team member Sam Arnett, who demonstrated his award-winning benchrest technique with a barely measurable .109 inches. By comparison, an eighth of an inch equals .125 inches, so go figure.

Aside from its obviously super-accurate barrel, much of the MK II's shootability was credited to its weight and the solid way the contoured stock rides the bags.

Testers' Comments: Incredible value; can't beat the price for this kind of accuracy; Trigger pull could be better; A tack driver; Savage can be proud of this firearm; Aesthetically very pleasing overall; a damned fine .22 rifle; Iżll buy it."

Editor's Choice
Great Buy

Remington 700 and Nighthawk Custom.

I don't know that it's fair to include anything custom in this catergory.  I just looked at the Gunwerks custom guns and they say they will be pie plate shooters out past 1,000 yards.  Of course they run over $7k...

And they won't shoot any better than a standard Model 700.

Has to be the Tikka T3. it maybe not be the prettiest but it has a trigger from the factory set at 3 LBS. and they all shoot awesome. I have a 243. that will put 5 shots you can cover with a dime.

When speaking of accurate rifles 'out of the box', we should back it with credible evidence, such as:
  http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2009/08/savage-palma-rifle-stars-in-tv-spot/
      Or this:
  http://www.savagearms.com/news/article/?id=1DoKxAoZh

Then there is John Simone, experienced competitor who developed the "Black Death Challenge", who speaks on the very accurate rimfire rifles.   http://www.foremosthunting.com/Resources/GunsandAmmo/GunReviews/CZ452RifleReview/tabid/1308/Default.aspx

Then there's ALWAYS the "safety factor".

I can vouch for the natural accuracy of those CZ rifles..I have a CZ 452 Special.  Beautiful piece of work that shoots like a laser!
The CZs are really so well made and so remarkable in their accuracy..I wish I had more of them ! I have no doubt the centerfires perform as well...
Below, take a look at the CZ Special .22LR from this angle, the standard iron sights the workmanship...and they shoot as good as they look !

Some of those off brands can be made to shoot by a good gunsmith.  I'm just not interested.

Some of those Remington nowadays - brands -can be made to shoot by a good gunsmith.

The tikka may not be( American,) but three out of three after installing the scope were great out of the box with no tinkering needed .
Then being Canadain all our arms now are imported - so no thought is given where they are made . We look for the best value for our money .
It seems most rifles made here on this side of the pond - guys can.t leave them alone before doing something to the triggers and bedding .
Happy

I have heard the Remington 700 is the gun most often accurised by gunsmiths in America. This is a fact and a true statement.

Thats because there are twenty times more of them then any other.

And there are 20 times more aftermarket parts for them.

If you want the most accurate custom rifle there's no point in starting with an off brand, get a Model 700.

Ironglow, those CZ's are the finest, well made rimfires under $500 dollars I've ever laid hands on.  I've fired a buddies that had the sliding rear sights that was adjustable for different ranges and I had little trouble hitting targets from 50 to 150yds sliding those sights back and forth.  Another old fellow had a CZ with a leupold scope ontop shooting 6inch gongs at 200yds offhanded, he didn't miss the entire time I watched him.  He said he practiced to 500yds with that CZ and I believed him by the ease he was hitting at 200yds offhanded.  That one day at the range convinced me that some day I've got to own one but unemployment has halted my gun buying.  :(

 Dave,
Get one when you can, you'll not regret it !  I like my Savage rimfires, but the CZ is built like a super-quality centerfire.
That bolt action is built like a bank vault door..and as you pointed out, I doubt there are better iron sights anywhere else..
