The tariffs are a hotly debated issue. It is evident that some profited from high tariffs.The Tariff was the only means of the Gov. to pay its bills---the optimum position being that the government had bills to pay.
Tariffs were not first concieved in this nation.
Tariffs were designed for:
1 collecting money to pay bills
2 putting nationally produced goods on par of cost for imported goods.
John Deere exported a lot of their new stainless plows to Europe---no charge from the gov. on exports.
It is like wal-mart, you may get it cheaper but is it fair for American business.
I like level playing fields. It forces better product construction and Americans can work.
I like Americans having jobs.
It would not bother me to just stop all imports--which includes Hersey Bars.

I like it when Americans produce the best in the world and get the price it is worth . The cars of the 70's and 80's and 90's made in America cost more and were junk in many cases , why support that . If Americans making goods can't give other Americans a good product at a competitive price I don't care to give them my money to support their infalted lifestyles and over pay.

That is a good point.
We are talking about those times---and your right, it does get a little confusing.
if we had just let GM go the way of the Republic it would have been a better-and bitter-lesson, IMO.

Really the poor construction of cars in the 60-80''s was not the fault of fabrication but one of design and management decisions.

Gee I figured the loose bolts and missing parts was assy line workers either being stupid or put in positions they were mentaly challenged to do. How silly of me , should have known it was the wrong place to put a bolt or the guy miles away at a desk didn't tighten it up .

My point was the American auto industry and ALL players were cheating consumers and don't deserve support when it acts that way. nor does anyother industry.

At this point in time , what went on during that sad part in U.S. history can not be changed. What is important is to work together and make our country a better place to live. This whole section should be deleted--

We have differences--we should not deny or exggerate them.
I actually see no reason to delete, it has been plesant except for a bump or two.
We know what is, and I don't think anyone denies that.

Agreed tuck2 But itll never happen here . To many here that only know the truth, as they see it anyway. This section might fit better up a couple spots tho under Truth, Lies, and Conspiracy Theories.

Didnt intend it to sound nasty, Just throwing out a point. I also hope the Fighting part is over. We do need to stand together and have many times as you say. I for one am glad I did it with many southerners who were, still are and always will be great friends.
I think we all lost plenty in the War discussed here, But will blaming one side or the other for something that happened 150 yrs ago change anything ? It will only bring out Hate and mistrust in us.

I hope I aint addin' fuel to anyones fire after what seems a nice closure to a vigorous debate, but...

It seems there's alot of people kinda ardently repeating that they're repeating FACTS. That's in regards to Martin Luther King's nature, Speeches from Lincoln, percentages of the South who owned slaves, Mary Lincoln owning slaves after the War of Northern Aggression, etc.

Can I get y'all to cite a few sources, and post some link that support your views, so I can better understand your perceptions and maybe learn a little something?

I sure appreciate any information y'all can give!

Not the 10th Man, you might try the stickies at the top of the threads, or you could try a few of these, as they are official sources...

The Library of Congress... www.loc.gov

The Official Record of the War of the Rebellion... this was compiled by the Federal Government after the War. It is comprised of actual letters, dispatches, orders, etc., from BOTH sides. I doubt very seriously if they knew exactly what they were preserving when they did this. It has some of the most compelling and comprehensive information available. The Official Record was compiled in the form of what we would have considered in the 1960's and 1970's as a HUGE set of encyclopedias. Many, many volumes... as you can imagine it would be, with so much to record.

These are two of my favorite sources to obtain information from. There are certainly countless others out there, but these two are among the very best of the best.

I will try to post a few direct links to some really good topics from these two. It might take me a few days to get them on here, as I am really tied up for a while and I haven't had the time to get on here as much as I would like to.
