KNUCKLE BUSTING
« on: February 17, 2011, 12:01:05 PM »
Shooting the Smith Model 28 today---.357 Mags.
A dream to shoot but today I began busting my middle knuckle of my right hand on the trigger guard.
I adjusted the grip to more in my fingers---but that feels uncomfortable. First time and it does not happen with .38 +P's. has not happened with the prior use of factory .357's.
HUMMMMM---suggestions?

Get a Tyler T-Grip for it, or any grips of your liking that fill in the area behind the trigger guard.

I got a solution and it is called Band-Aids.  Many places sell them.  Cheap too.  Get you some and keep them in your shooting kit and use them.
You will be surprised at how simple it is to cure that problem.
I have used masking tape too.
I am not going to adjust a comfortable hand placement just because my finger gets rapped when there is an easy fix.

William, it is a common occurance on Smith magnums. Try a Tyler T-grip like the ones on these two and a pair of smaller grips. Do you have a square butt, or round butt Model 28?

Come on up and shoot this cheap 410 bore derringer I have....as a matter of fact, take it home with you.  You won't notice the Smith anymore. :'(

I agree with the Tyler grips.

my  500 has never hurt my hand

my 22 oz 357 smith doesn't bother me  either  with even the 180 grain full powered loads

but then  they  HAVE   HOGUE  AND A SOFT CRIMSONTRACE  GRIPS

ALSO  MY 44 MAGS...WITH  280 GRAINS
are the same frame as your 28......is no problem  with hagues

I was remembering your advice when I typed the post and figgered that was the solution.
Strange that it started today---which was the actual concern.
I have the order form printed out and it will go in the mail this week.
I think I am going to get the flat black.

Ya ought to try my SBH in the .44 mag with that Dragon back trigger guard William, on some days I would come home from the range a bloody mess but not always.

This seems to be the question. One thing that I noted upon the first deer hunt with that SBH is that with near full power loads, that razor blade of a trigger guard never touched my knuckle! This did not dawn on me until I was doing the field dressing chores but did catch my intrest on why this happened?

My thoughts returned to the hunt. A deer will definitely catch your attention as will my little 2" steel plate that hangs next to a 3" and a 6" out at the 50 yrd line, Novelty targets, or the ones that you really like also qualify. Under these conditions, it seems that one completely forgets about the firearm in hand with all concentration being on the breathing, sight picture, and pressuring up that trigger. The shot goes off and all is well.

Back at the range though, some of the targets are just not that interesting. A hit is going to go without question and perhaps concentration shifts to the Revolver in hand rather than addressing the target and the sight picture?...perhaps one will hold onto the gun too tightly and the shooter will grip it even tighter along with trying to crack it like a whip which can be observed if the hammer falls on an empty cylinder. The involuntary flinch can bring about all sorts of problems and perhaps knuckle busting is one of them?

This is not going to be a cure all because different frame sizes along with different sized hands are going to demand some modification at times. Seems like if one is relaxed and addressing the target it can go a long way though.

As I sit here fiddling with the gripping of the weapon---which I have done a lot since the range experience--- I notice that if I position the grip so that just the pad of the first joint touches the trigger, the knuckle seems out of the way.
What I do not know is if this was the original grip. I am not sure if this was the grip when I first noticed the knuckle banging.
I do know that if I attempt to shoot it double action I must get more pad on the trigger and then the knuckle comes into play.
Anywho--it will be 8 weeks before the T gets here so I will have time to investigate this phenomena.

The flat black and gloss black are anodized over the aluminum. Understand that it will scratch off, but otherwise they are the same. The method I use in the pictures, not only solve the grip problem, but in my "old school" opinion looks nice, and reduces the size of the grip for better carry and concealment. Let us know what you come up with.

I can touch up the flat black if I desire.
I am really not sure what you did and how you did it---if you could eleborate.
Hopefully I will not need to fit it.
Square butt.

PS-- I have not seen a post about this but I---and well many here---are happy you made it thru the weather without any mishaps.

Reminds me shooting 158 gr SWC's at 1550 fps from a Model 19. Lots of band aids there! But that was a great load!

I have had some problems in the past when target shooting with knuckle rapping.

I bought a shooting glove...it has a very slightly padded palm and web with a pad over the back of the middle finger.  I believe it is made by Michael's...I have had it for years and years. It solved the problem, even with heavy loads in .357s, .41s or .44s.

Never used it when hunting, only when target shooting and plinking. I wouldn't think you would shoot enough rounds to need one when hunting, unless you were trying to clean out a prairie dog colony or were attacked by a battalion of chipmunks.

I got myself the first time I shot my 629-1. It came with the nice Smith cocobolo target grips.
I went to my gunsmith friend, hand still throbbing, and bought a set of Pachmyers. I was glad
he had them in stock as I was excited and wanted to burn some ammo in the "new" one.Any
grip that fills the space behind the trigger guard should work, I would think.

I had my RSBH turn in my hands when i fired it.  Then i put a larger set of grips on it, but it still wanted to turn with my stout loads.  Now with all my guns they have the pachmayer presentation rubber grips on everything from my revolvers to my 1911's.  I like them because i can actually squeeze them and hold the gun very firmly with one hand.  CZY

My mdl 29 raps my second knuckle on my middle finger with full power loads. It's a bit uncomfortable if I'm shooting  more than a few cylinder's full. That's pretty rare, but for those occasions I just put a couple of band-aids on it and fire away.

My 44 mags would occasionally hit my finger that way as well. (Redhawk, 29/629)
I found a cure for it through the use of the Herrett's Jordan Trooper stock. It fills in most of the area behind the trigger guard and the shape of the grip itself helps to lessen the feel of recoil. It doesn't hurt any that they are also a nice pretty wood but that's wasn't the objective, it's just a side benefit.
Good luck with whatever you eventually find that works for you.

William you may have become more comfortable with the gun and relaxed your grip somewhat. The T-grip is a good fix and I have used them . I find a better fix is grips/stocks that fill in like the T-grip . They don't move like the T -grip can do .

my dad  liked the tylet-t grip  thing

they  didn't make  hogues grips for his generation

i have felt those  tyler-t ''adapters  move too

also  do you have a round or square frame?
new smiths have a round frame with square grip...your 28  is probly square
i prefer the round frames and round grips

just go to a gun store /gun show they should have samples

no one here  has your hands to see what works for you

i nver used to like the finger grooves  but  i like them  now better
the grooves  make for a more consistent grip

When I used the T-grip it would move . It is held in place by two copper metal strips that are sandwiched between the grip frame and the stocks or grips . The strips or tabs can be bent around the frame but I found the t-grip still moved a bit. I find  stocks (wood) that fill the area behind the trigger guard works better for me. An example would be  boot grips as they fill this area .
