It's kinda funny how things work out.  My Bro-Inlaw was invited on an elk hunt this fall. He wasn't totally sure his .280 was enough gun. So, I loaned him my 35 Whelen. Well, this morning was the first day I had talked with him since his return. He took a nice 5x6 at 185 yds. Evidently he was impressed by the 35. He asked if I wanted it back! Well Duh   But I said I would sell it, if he really wanted it. I have many fond memories with that rifle, but been holding off on a 338-06, because of it's close performance to the 35. Well, I got a fair price for the 35. So now I have a justifiable (?) reason to build a 338-06. It will definately be a single shot. Just not sure on which action yet.

I'd tell him to go find his own .35 Whelen and get your memory-filled rifle back from your brother-in-law.

You can always build another rifle, but you can't replace the "memories" held by your .35 Whelen... once it's gone... it's GONE!

Many years from now, if you've still got your Whelen, you can sit in front of the fire, caress it's stock and sight down it's barrel... and REMEMBER those precious times the rifle served you so well.

And, eventually, you can give the Whelen to your son or grandson and fill his heart & soul with the rich tales and irreplacable memories the Whelen holds for you.  I think you'll find he will have an even greater respect for the rifle and the memories than you have.

Just my  :money:  worth...

I hear ya Ron. But the memories will always be mine. To me firearms are tools, and I don't mind change every so often. I do have a couple that I won't let go of, but they wouldn't be so easily replaced.

A Ruger #1 in .338-06 would be hard to beat.  I have a Ruger 77 with a medium-heavy contour 24" Atkinson barrel that shoots fantastic!  Good luck with your project!

At one time i figured the worlds best caliber/cartridge would be the .338/06 imp..  I had the first one built to see if i would like it useing a Ruger 77 action and bbl., and that gun took a few moose and one brown bear.  A couple years later, i built a second one useing a left hand 700 Rem action, Douglas premium bbl., and had it stocked in a really nice piece of french walnut.  I still have it to this day, even though it no longer gets any use.

The first 3 years i hunted with the second rifle, i shot 13 big game animials with it, includeing Sitka blk tail deer, brown bear, caribou, and moose.   (includeing the one in the picture)

Great rifle, great cal., that worked well when i was useing it!!

I own and shoot both the 35 Whelen and the 338 RUM, but I am having a 338/06 built on an 1903 Springfield action.  It will be interesting to see the differences between the Whelen and the 338/06.
