Glock 23 with laser
« on: February 18, 2011, 12:18:51 PM »
My reliable 23 would not quite go back into battery reliably after mounting a laser on the rail. A long time ago I thought there was a rumor about this issue.
Does anyone have some more info?

Thanks.

Yeah, I'll try to help you with it.  You might not like what I have to say, though!  There are two popular fixes:

(1)  Use a stronger (11 coil) magazine spring AND a stronger recoil spring, too.  I very much like Wolff Gunsprings' 19# recoil spring and steel guide rod.  This might completely solve your problem for you.

(2)  Only use a laser or tac light with, both, a plastic body and plastic attachment rails.  (Has something to do with polymer frame flexing.)

That's it.  If the one solution doesn't work then the other one should.  You might even want to try both solutions together.

+1 on what Glock doctor said.  I see a lot of people over lubricating their glocks too. Try 100% silicone spray and or Lucas gun oil... 8)

I am a Glock armorer, and have carried the 23s on the 21s. The 23s were one of the best duty pistols I carried in 20 years of L.E. including SWAT, and Tactical K-9. With 18 years of that as a weapons instructor I will say the laser has it's place, but I don't see it in a fighting pistol. I do however, heavily endorse the trijicon night sights, at least for the front sight, or both if you have the funds. jmtcw

that makes me feel pretty good about my choice!  after considering my options, i decided on a 23 for my gun.   having owned and shot almost every type pistol you can think of helped me make my decision.  i love my glock 20, but i thought it would be too big to carry comfortably all day and definately too big to conceal on my 5'6" frame.   i thought about the 22, but i thought the 23 would be just a smidge easier to carry/conceal; yet enough beef to get the job done should it ever be needed.    i installed the night sight on the front, but i really like the adjustable rear and decided to leave it on.
i have a laser/light on the 20, but not on the 23 because it increases the weight considerably.  i carry it all day long and it doesnt impede my movement one bit.

I have seen several Glocks malfunction with lights installed on the rails. If you are going to carry one with a light/laser, or anything attached, extensive test firing is in order. The lights with a spring lock attachment seem to work better than the ones that are secured with a clamping screw due to compression of the frame binding the recoil spring when tightened. I have also seen a few of the lights launched over the shooters shoulder in recoil.  Anything attached to the rail also adds considerable bulk and weight. It's passable with a duty holster designed to accommodate the pistol with the light attached, but way too bulky for concealed carry. If you must have a laser, try one of the models that attach to the grip. They don't require a special holster, add minimal bulk, and don't interfere with the function of the pistol.
