Need help with sighting in 270 Win
« on: February 19, 2011, 08:16:20 AM »
First time at the range with Handi built primarily with parts here from GBO members. Shooting Winchester Super X, 130 gr. Power Points. Fairly windy today with 20-25 MPH gusts and cold.  Used several sand bags for my rest, Left hand on top of scope. Bushnell scope 3-9 x 40.

At 50 yds after one fouling shot from a clean barrel, I had a 1.4" group 4" high over a standard orange stick on bullseye, on the horizontal it was just about perfect. Not bad for me, so I moved the target out to 100 yds thinking since I was high at 50 it should be right on target at 100.

At 100, shot #4 was on a similar line vertically and horizontally as the first 3 shots at 50yds but it was another 2.5" higher, shot #5 was a called flyer, shot#6 was again a nice 1.62" from shot #4.  So instead of the 100 yd shots dropping down onto the target as I figured, they were 6.5" above the target.  At that point the wind was bothering my eyes and I called it quits.

Can someone explain the ballistics to me for this caliber? Ballistics and trajectories always seem like a foreign language to me...I must be math challenged or something.

Looks like this parts Handi is going to be a shooter and I haven't even begun to reload for it yet  :)
Thanks.

Jal,

That fast a bullet will still be gaining height from 50 to 100 yards as your 1.5" or so scope to barrel offset has the muzzle pointed up compared to your line of sight.  I would set it around 0.5" to 1" high @ 50 and try again, it will probably still be high @ 100 but not so bad.

BB is right on, Winchester shows .2" high at 50yds is dead on at 100yds.

Thanks Tim and BB that helps. I will wait for a less windy day and try that out.  Plus I will do some load development with reloads in the meantime. This little thaw we've had the past week won't last much longer.

Any suggestions for something I might read that explains ballistics in general?

Here's a little reading material to get you started, until someone here can explain exterior ballistics & trajectory to you:

Hope this helps.

Here's a good article for MPBR.I shoot a 270 a lot and have for years.I have mine set at 1 1/2"-2"high at 100.I can hold dead on out to about 325 -350.I have one place that I've hunted that it 330 across the wheat field.I usually hold top of back and put right through the boiler on deer.I shoot the rem 130 gr.corlokt.This is out of a old remmy 760 pump that I've had for 30+ years.

That 1.5"-2" high at 100 is just about perfect for a 130gr 270 bullet.
That will still have you in the kill area on a deer at around 300 as stated.
Many years ago i was able to take two deer in two years from the same blind at ranges of 503 and 487 with that same set up by holding just about 10" to 12" above the shoulders for a mid to lower mid shoulder shot.
Both deer were down at the shot although one needed to be finished when I got to it.
That was back when I was very young and just starting to really hunt.
I have since repeated the shot on a mercy killing but try to get closer when possible.
The 270 can and will do what needs to be done in the hands of a skilled shooter.
Learn your gun, use it all the time for everything, and you will come to trust and rely on it.

Looking at the Win site Time posted and also looking at Remington Shoot with the 130 gr corelok it seems that if your impact is about  .20 inches or so low at 50 yd,  then you should be on at 100yds.  So to be sited in  at 100yd for the 270 (with  130 gr), you have to be low at 50yd,   that thought took me a minute or two to get a grip on but looking at graph of trajectory put it in perspecive.

I agree with LONGTOM, just adjust to 2" high at 100 and call it good.  Then start shooting at all differant yardages till you are comfortable with your gun and your ability to hit what you want at any given yardage.

Somedays I use only reactive targets.  4" clay disk out to 300 yards.  Then either 2 liter soda bottles or 1 gal milk jugs on out to 500 yards.  Start with the clay targets at 200 yards,  Then increase each time you go to the range by 25 yards.  Then when you get to 300 yards start using larger targets (milk jugs) and increase by 25 once you can consistantly hit every shot at that yardage.  Once you get to 500 yards you should be ready to go, and bust your ego when you miss judge distance and miss a Buck at 250 yards.  Been there, done that.
