Proper primer for 44 Mag

I just bought a new Hornady reloading manual and it  says to use a large pistol primer for a 240 gr XTP bullet when loaded with W296 powder. In my other manual ( Lyman) it says to use a large pistol mag primer. Was this determined by the powder manufacture and not Hornady?

My guess is that it's because all the primers that Hornady lists are Winchester and they only make a large pistol (#7) that they say is suitable for mag loads.  Other companies like CCI and Fed make a different primer for large pistol magnums.  I don't have a Lyman manual so I don't know what brand primers they call for in their data.

I have never had a hiccup using WLP primers with W-296 in either the .44 Mag or .357  .  I'm talking Max. loads for clanking Steel out at 200 Yds.

W296 is hard to light.  I'd use a magnum primer.

^......this. The Lyman manual uses CCIs, and call for standard and magnum in their recipes dependent on powder used.  I consider the  WLP,  a magnum primer and use it as such when using manuals like the Lyman that call for them.

I load all my 44mag using WLP and have not had an issue using H110 which is pretty close to W296. Try a batch using both types and see which one preforms better. I personally have never been able to shoot the difference in the loads I have tried both primers in.

This may sound a bit radical and I may catch hell for it, but I have almost completely eliminated all of my “regular” primers.  I use almost exclusively magnum designation primers.  Loads that I started with using standard primers many years ago and they were very accurate, I have stayed with standard.  Maybe because of superstition!!!!...

If I am use a powder that magnums aren’t listed for, so what.  If I start low and work up the differences in primers will be outweighed.  My opinion…

That way, if magnum primers are recommended, they are being used anyhow…

I have done that with shotgun, rifle, handgun and whatever else (is there anything else?)…

Reloading manuals are GUIDES and that is as far  as I am concerned…

NO, I don’t go over maximum, ‘course Trail Boss is an exception as the 70% formula takes you over published data, but I have never had a problem with magnum primers…

Much literature indicates that some manufacture’s standard primers are “more powerful” than some manufactures magnum primers.  So be it...

Let’s keep this reloading hobby simple.  As one ages, this becomes more apparent…

My Lyman manual says large pistol. I have always had better velocity out of handgun and rifle with large pistol magnum primers. I hunt with the 44's and like that extra speed with jacketed bullets.

ive pretty much standardized on 350 ccis for 110/296 and aa9/wc820

My Lyman manual has one of thease * by the info which means magnum primers. For the .44 Mag.
