I went back to W.V. on Thursday with my new Encore 209X50 muzzleloader and I shot a button buck. I thought it was a doe until I went to gut it and found you know what! I'm shooting two 50 grain pellets of Triple 7 and a Hornady 44 caliber 240 grain XTP bullet. Two deer came up out of a deep ravine onto a flat I was watching and were about 100 yards away. Both deer took off running when I shot and I was thinking, how could I have missed. I went down to where they were standing and I found real tiny drops of blood. If it weren't for the snow on the ground it would have been real hard to track. I found the deer about 80 to 100 yards from where I shot it. The bullet hit about 3 inches down fron the top of the back and three inches behind the left shoulder. There was about a two to three inch hole in the ribs and no exit hole. This one was a piece of cake dragging out since it was all DOWN hill and there was snow on the ground. When I got home I skinned it out and I found the bullet just under the hide on the right hind leg. Perfect mushroom and it weighs 223 grs. and expanded to .750 inches.

Congratulations Jay. That type of performance from an XTP is so typical and what keeps most people using them.

Good rifle!
Good shot!
Good job of tracking!

A lot of deer are lost by people who don't know better, or who don't give a s***, or who are lazy. They shoot, the deer runs off, they go to where the deer was and don't see anything. They lock and load and look for another deer.
Like you said, you find some tiny drops of blood you are in business. A high lung shot will do that.
If a guy "loses" a deer, and he didn't spend 15 minutes on his hands and knees looking for that first drop of blood, he didn't really try to find it.
Aim small don't miss.
