barrel harmonics???
« on: December 27, 2002, 12:50:04 AM »
In a post below somebody was talking about making a muzzle break. In one of the replies it was mentioned about barrel harmonics. This got me   thinking, if putting something on the end of a barrel or even if the fore end was touching the barrel it would change the harmonics.  So what about the front sight, how does it change the barrel? Will taking it off help or harm accuracy?

It depends on what key you are going to play the barrel.....

...just blow through it and see....if it is a little flat...take another 1/4 inch off and try it again......
Sorry...just kidding....I am sure there is something to what you are saying, I certainly wouldnt go cutting holes in MY barrel.  I think a muzzle break has to be done very precisely, it would certainly effect accuracy if the ports are uneven,  I dont think you would see much difference as far as the front sight is concerned.  However....I have a few long barrels that somebody installed a 'rear' sight in the middle of the barrel, I sure wish that they werent there.  I think that would affect 'harmonics' a lot more..
I'm certainly not an expert though.
....make it count

You will not belive it but it is true. Just recently I have been playing with a home made muzzle brake. It is a M60 machinegun flash suppresor cut of to 1.5inches drilled to fit my 30br barrel and tapped for a set screw. Looks like a big as fostner bit. We the other day I took it out and with my refrence load for this cartidge it did not affect point of impact or groupe size. Fine great it did help recoil. So lets braze the botomm 3 slits shut and leave the top 2 opend and braze a washer on it. Well while I am drinking and taking cold medicine and pain killers for my back. Lets go ahead and braze it to the barrell oops left to much brazing rod on one side. Oh well let it cool and file it of if it works. Well my son and I went to the range yesterday to sitght in his RBH in 30 carbine. So I decide lets take the 30br / no really ugly barrell and see what it does. well the first round blew the washer off. So lets just shoot and see how it does. hmm not on papper?! well lets take some elevation out now on paper but just barely take out a whole lot now in the center and groupes are itty bitty. So lets try the new bullet wow 4 stacked on top of each other. So this story proves drink and welding  crap to the end of a barrell some times work how often I don know but if you have a barrel I have beer and cold medicine.
This is a tru story I mean it I will scan or take picture of barrel soon. Oh and I allso painted the wood on the gun purple while doing all this.
lead bullets done right
