TC Encore Rifles
« on: December 21, 2003, 05:46:50 AM »
Hello Gentlemen

I am seriously considering the purchase of a TC Encore single shot rifle.  I have no experience with single shot rifles but I have always been interested in getting one.  I hunt mostly deer, elk, bear, and moose. My question I suppose would be if it is the right choice for hunting the bigger stuff.  Would I be at much of a disadvatage with the single shot as opposed to using a bolt action rifle!  I realize the first shot is the most important but how fast can you get a second shot off if its neccesary!  I love the fact that you really have to make sure your first shot counts with a single shot but in the back of my mind I keep wondering if its the right choice.  The fact that you can buy diffrent barrels to suit diffrent hunts is very appealing to me.  I currently hunt with a Remington Model 700 Classic in 7mm-08 and it has done everything asked of it flawlessly but I would like to hit the bigger critters with something with more umph!  That is where the TC Encore would come in.  I figure a 45/70 barrel for black bears and Moose and a 300 Win mag barrel for Elk and Caribou!  One gun for two jobs that is what has attracted me to them! I guess I am looking for some real life hunting experience from you fella's with your single shot rifles.

Thanks for the help

McRae

I dont see much of a disadvantge at all.  Sure your re-loading time is slower than the repeaters, but it is infinitly faster than the muzzel loader, and a lot of folks can fire, restuff the smoke pole, and still get off a second shot.  My deer I shot with a 12ga  went down to the ground with the first shot, a good 5 seconds later it finaly got to its feet and I then let fly again (which, I later found, was not necessary.)  So, no no no, you are at NO disadvantage.

As a recent adherent to the Encore I see no disadvantage.  I like the simpler setup and the fact that I can have a single gun setup for multiple cartridges.  The Encore is a great field gun as its balance is near perfect.

Yup,  darn fine setup. I'm setup for rifle season with my .444Marlin bbl,
black powder season with my 209X.50, .22-250 for varmint and 12 guage
for bird. All in  one package. As far as quick follow ups, T/C sell's a wrist band that hold's 2 extra shots close and ready. Better than fumblin through your pockets.

This weekend I got my first Encore, a .300 Win. Magnum.

It's great! I've tried three different 150 grain factory loads, and have averaged a bit under 1.5" for all groups, with the largest under 2".  None of these were with premium bullets, by the way.

I'm looking forward to reloading for this rifle.

I was concerned about recoil, and while you know when you fire a round, it's not punishing. I've been kicked worse by a .308 with a stock which didn't fit me well.

Congtrats Bob, I'm glad you're happy with your purchase.
If you would like a really accurate load once you start reloading might I suggest a load that has worked very well for me.
