Anybody hunting on a Westerfelt lease?
« on: February 21, 2011, 03:38:24 PM »
Just completed our first deer season on a Westerfelt lease. (formerly Gulf States)

1. They have their own game wardens; I'm thinking their game wardens are motivated to maximize the value of the lease, not necessarily do what other GWs do. Comments?

2. They have the right to cut trees at anytime. Their website has a schedule for cutting, then it gets put off a year. Any experience with that?

3. Other experiences with them?

I have been in a few hunting clubs that leased their land and you are correct, they use their own private game wardens, usually police officers that works it as a part time job. Some of our hunting club members had been harassed quite a bit by some of their aggressive game wardens. Those were the ones that walked out to the deer stands and wanted to see hunting licenses and permits while you were on stand trying to be quite. We thought it was harassment by getting up early and getting in a climbing stand and sitting there quietly for a few hours and then one of their game wardens walking out disturbing everything in the woods wanting to see permits, it simply ended your morning hunt.  >:(

Had pictures of some folks trespassing on the game camera.

The Westervelt lease states:
Lessee agrees that persons observed on the premises and believed to be trespassers will be
reported to Lessor.  No other action whatsoever is to be taken towards such persons.

Assumed that meant they would take action, so we sent the pics to Westervelt.
NOPE.
They offered advice on how to shore up the entrances to THEIR property.
