I hated to hear this. The four Americans who were captured on their yacht S/V Quest are now dead.

I don't have a suggestion for a solution other than if we are going to spend billions to fight terrorists in the desert, perhaps we should make an effort to stomp out terrorism on the high seas as well. This is getting out of hand.

We fight terrorist in the desert because there is oil and other interests.
If ever there was a country that needed invaded it's Somalia. Why don't we rid the world of these evil pirates, and start a Democracy like we are trying to do in other places around the globe.

Perhaps it's just not worth it monetarily.

If it is true that the 4 Americans have been killed by Somalian pirates, then it is due in part because those Americans chose to ignore the dangers of venturing into harms way. They either put their faith in their religion that someone would watch out for them, or they were just naive. Anyway, I totally disagree that this warrants endangering even more Americans by sending an invasion force to Somalia. Unless of course some prep-work is done first. The prep-work I envision would be to light the place up (temporaily) as in, incinerate the stinking $hi_ hole.

There should be a terrible price to pay for the taking of American lives and it's about time to begin the process. If it is done right, it shouldn't have to be done too often.

But at 8 a.m. East Africa time today, a rocket-propelled grenade was fired from the Quest at the USS Sterett, a guided-missile destroyer 600 yards (meters) away. The RPG missed and almost immediately afterward small arms fire was heard coming from the yacht, said Vice Adm. Mark Fox, commander of the U.S. 5th Fleet in Bahrain.

Several pirates then appeared on deck with their hands up. U.S. naval forces boarded the vessel and tried to provide lifesaving care to the Americans, but they died, Fox said. No U.S. forces were injured or killed.

Thirteen pirates were captured and detained Tuesday, and two other pirates had boarded the USS Sterett on Monday to negotiate, Fox said.

A member of a U.S. special operations force killed one of the pirates with a knife, Fox said. A second pirate was also killed, and the bodies of two other pirates were discovered on board, bringing to 19 the total number of pirates involved. The U.S. military didn't say how those two died and it was not known if the pirates had fought among themselves.

So we do what, wait while the pirates expand from 1000 miles from their coast to 2000, 3000? At what point do you quit saying 'Well if the dumb idiots kept more than 5000 miles from Somalia's coast they wouldn't have got what they got'.

Hmmm so we just let Somalian pirates and Mexican drug dealers shrink or borders for us, and as they expand, we move our borders further away.

I saw the same report, and my first thought was that we were being lied to. If a pirate was killed by a knife that seems to indicate 1)he was not surrendering and 2) someone was trying to board the ship quietly. I wonder if this wasn't a raid gone bad... I hope not, and maybe we'll never know...

Avy, reread the post you quoted. You will find he is advocating the use of bombing runs rather than boots on the ground. I agree with him. Why endanger the lives of our young men and women when we can do more from the air?

We used to know what to do with pirates, but somehow we forgot! I just saw on TV the pirate that was just sentenced the other day, he didn't look unhappy. I would expect that life in prison is probably better than he was used to before. If you notice, the one thing that the pirates off Africa have in common is they are Muslims (big surprise, huh?). Now how can we use that fact to discourage others?

Guys don't forget that we're not in this alone. I believe this is something the entire free world needs to concern itself with. French have already been involved, Russians, etc. Lots is at stake other than lives. People keep talking about money, well how many vessels of commerce have already been attacked and commandeered by these sea-going thugs? China will have commercial interests in this as well. I'm not calling for a new war led by the US or any shore invasion. And I don't believe that huge ships of war are the answer. My thoughts are we use our satellite technology, drones, small attack vessels with small crews and the like. We need to be small, maneuverable, precise and deadly. I really don't like the idea of bombing all of Somalia due to civilian casualties.
