I bought a sportster receiver...

I have been buying SB2 receivers for all my extra barrels. But I have been neglecting my SS1 receivers!! 

Currently, (before today) I have two complete rifles and three barrels. (A 22RF, 2/22Mags, a 17 HMR and a 17 mach II One mag and the mach II are complete guns.) I sold my extra 22Mag barrel to a friend and bought this receiver from Cougar for my 22LR with the proceeds.
I got a call yesterday from my dealer and ran down and picked up my new receiver tonight.  The barrel dropped right on no fitting!!! Nice and tight too!!

Last week I refinished a set of pallet wood Monte Carlo stocks with Rustoleum rattle can bed coating. I installed them on the receiver tonight.

The barrel was complete with a Leupold 2x7x28 Rim fire Special scope. YES the simms barrel vibration rubber REALLY WORKS!!!







Scope looks close to hammer and it is, but it clears. On my Mach II receiver this barrel will shoot one hole groups at 25 yards.

That looks great!   And, no barrel fitting is even better!   

Is that the Sims barrel de-resonator?   Do you find it helps your groups with these smaller calibers?

Yes it is a de-resonator and on this barrel it worked exactly as advertised. This barrel was lucky to hit a tennis ball at 25 yards before the Simms accuriser. Now it will hit a dime at same distance.

I started a thread and IIRC Tim added it to FAQs outlining the whole thing pics and all. YES it really works!!!!

Nice.   I'll have to try one.   I have an .17HMR that makes dime sized groups @ 100.   ;D     

That's obviously the bull barrel model?    Is it a squeeze or did it go on pretty easy?

The finish on handis is rough. Making install rough ESP on bull barrels. But it will go.
Dime sized groups are very good for 100!! I doubt you will improve on it. IMHO The gun and 90% of shooters are physically incapably of better.

Bed liner paint, why didn't I think of that.  I have a plastic bolt gun stock that I bought the "special" crinkle paint for, and it never did look too good. Now it's getting dinged up enough that I may have to overhaul it.

Well, the gun is more than capable.   But, that's off the Lead Sled with no wind!     ;) 

I'll have to get one and give it a try.   

I haven't shot for groups in a long time, but this is one of the last I shot before I was satisfied with the accurizing:

I took it to the range this AM...

First off, when I bought this barrel it was not a good shooter. I added the DE-Resonator from Simms laboratories. Then it was a great shooter!!
Before this receiver I only had one sportster receiver. It shot on target with that receiver.
Enter the new receiver... It fit almost perfectly, well enough that all I would have done is a bit more engagement at the latch. But that's being picky, so I left it alone.
I was out of the SGB ammo I prefer to hunt with so I grabbed a couple boxes of R50, a box of Cyclone and a Box of Stingers.

It took me about 10 bullets to find where this hit at 50 yards!!! It was almost a foot high?!?!?!?! Remember it was sited in on the other receiver. NOT so with its new receiver!!! I adjusted and quickly found it still shot small groups back on target. Shooting fast easily on a nickel, settle down and do what your supposed to, and its at or under a dime.

The Remington Cyclones are part of a case I bought years ago because they shot so well from my Marlin Custom Squirrel. They shoot just as well in the H&R!! Again easily under a dime, just low centered on a 50 yard bull.

The Stingers are never great in my guns, but I like the performance on bigger small game. It shot nice groups just under a inch, I'll say you could almost always hit a nickel at 50 yards. Plenty accurate enough for the yardages the 22RF works at.

The Eley R50 is always great shooting fodder, that's why I always keep a couple bricks on the shelf!! (If you have never tried it and you have a good shooting 22. Buy a box and I'll bet the groups shrink!!) It shot nearly in the same hole the group gradually opened to less than a dime at the same 50 yards. BUT I needed to move the resonator. Before moving it it would shoot almost touching shots. I pulled it a half inch toward the forend and lo and behold I again found its sweet spot. I went back and shot the other two bullets and didn't notice any difference worth mentioning.

Temps where in the mid twenties, warm enough to shoot a while, but too cold to fiddle with cameras...

Doubtful. It shot so badly (2" + at 50 yards) and shoots so good now there is no reason to purposefully shoot big groups.  ;) ;)

But that was on the other receiver; it might do better now? I'd just have to try it just because......

I was at a dealer the otherday...

They had two handis on the rack. A 500 pallet wood for 179 and a 22RF syn for 150!!!

I left them there but have been thinking on them for a couple days now.  I DO NOT NEED THEM!!! But I kinda want that 22! I am nuts .....

As for wanting the 22; the Sportster barrel I fit to my 22Mag frame is a surprisingly good shooter, but I like 22s anyway for a lot of reasons.
As the the ,"Am I nuts".........I just cant go there  ;), but youre welcome at my crazy camp anytime!

How does NEED figure in to this? :)
I always thought a .500 would make a good replacement plinker for my Trapdoor .50-70. Brass is cheaper, stronger and I can put whatever sights on it that suit without altering the Trapdoor. I just never found one reasonable around here - probably for the best...
I just bought a Sportster .22LR with tuperware youth stock last week. I figured an extra .22 that will fit kids is never a bad thing and I have some extra full size stock sets. I won't be able to shoot it until next week but the thought of having a .17 cal barrel for it won't go away. I don't need it and I can't reload for it. Why do I want it? I really don't know. What is it about this this switch barrel stuff?  Handis and Contenders are understandable but I've got a switch barrel Rem 700 and even a Rolling Block. Changing my little Rossi 92 to takedown has been a planned project for awhile now to. Then I can add a .256 WWin barrel. Yup, I think it might be an illness...
