The 22 Mag is a definite step up from a 22lr, and very effective. The cost of ammo is less than the 223 even reloaded, and not everyone reloads. The bulk and weight of the ammo makes quite a difference also in many situations. I used to think the 22 mag was a useless round, but have since found it to be one of the most practical. Ammo can be found almost anywhere, the rifles and scopes for it are cheaper, it is much less likely to attract attention , especially of the unwanted variety. In the past, as a farm/ truck gun it is great. It is much better than a 22LR on wood chuck to coyote size game. If you reload and already have a 223 or Hornet, I would not run out and buy a 22 Mag, but if you do not reload etc I highly recommend the little cartridge, it is handy as a pocket on a shirt.
