My failure to fire experience
« on: February 24, 2011, 07:45:23 AM »
Here's my story maybe it will help some one else:

I sent my .270 NEF back to the factory because over time, my barrel became loose. They sent it back with a new barrel  that fitted perfect. I went to the range with some remington ammo to sight in & some handloads. I pull the trigger, and it didnt fire. I was like what the heck! I recocked it & pulled the trigger again & made sure I was followin thru, but it still didnt go off. Tried another & it went off, but for the remainder of the trip, every other one or two would mis fire & none of the hand loads would fire.  I called  H&r and was told that the gun was test fired with no problems and that I could send it back if I wanted to. I declined at the time & shelved the project for a later time. Eventually, I got a .223 bull barrel that I had factory fitted for another action(btw, when i sent that action in, it had a 3 pound trigger & came back with one around 7.5lbs >:( ) & decided to fit it to the action that was having the misfires. Well you guessed it, it continued to misfire with factory ammo. I looked thru the faqs here & tried many of the solutions, I changed the hammer spring, made sure I was locking it up tight, following thru on the trigger...etc. Stumped and still having problems, I pulled out my other handis, that have never misfired. The first thing that stood out to me was that on the other handis was that with the hammer in the cocked position, the tranfer bar covered the back of the firing pin entirely and on the action of the one that was misfiring, the transfer bar DID NOT! It only covered abou a third of the back of the pin. So when the hammer fell, it was not tdelivering a solid blow to the firing pin. I took apart a extra action that i have & remove the lifter/striker assembly from it & the on that misfired & placed them side by side for comparison and the one from the misfiring action was at 1/4 inch shorter than the other one. I changed out the striker/lifter assemblies between the two and now the firing pin was covered like the rest of my actions. Went to the range & it went BOOM every time!!!! What a relief!!

So I called H&R and spoke to a rep , told him my story & requested a relpacement striker & lifter assembly to replace the one that I pirated off my other action to fix the one they had  jacked up and I was told that I had to send the gun in because they could not send that part to me because it had to be put in at the factory!. Oh well,  thru this experience, I was forced to learn how to dissassemble the action & do a trigger job ;D (thanks perklo!) Now all my  Handis have nice triggers. Well I hope this can help others! Take Care, God Bless & GO NAVY!-Chris

Chris, Good Story thanks for sharing. I did one trigger job on one of my actions and struggled thru it. I decided I was just not handi but moreso just didn't like tinkering with it. Trouble is with my beer style income I can't afford a champagne appetite so I do what I can with my Handis and Toppers and was lucky my CVA Scout just purchased has been flawless out of the box so far. It is a nice quick handling rifle like a Handi without the tinkering. Again I'll add "so far."

Ive been curious about the variations in the striker portion of the t-bar assembly, thanx!
I suspect that they replaced your hammer/trigger because to them your light pull 'left them with a liability'!!!
If I had a nice trigger on one, and was about to send it in, I would throw a heavier pull set of works in it and ask for the factory trigger job too.
