This is a 20" diameter wheeled mortar carriage I built for a local friend of mine. The barrel he got from me 3 years ago is a 4.62" Federal Coehorn replica and weighs 80 pounds.

Any idea on how much it weighs? And how thick is the axle? Just curious.

that is awsome!!! i saw some drawing years ago for a fullscale english mortar like that. I wish i could shoot some thing like that in the n-ssa. but oh well, good job.

I think the carriage weighs about 90 lbs and the axle is 3/4" diameter. He fired the mortar several times in the past. A candle pin bowling ball fits. So does 4" pvc filled with concrete.

From the looks of it if on the wheeled carrage fully depressed
it could stand in for a howitzer.....

If the adjuster bracket was lower it could be fired from level. I think the recoil would be vicious. The trail is too light and it would flip forward if the barrel was leveled. It's towed with the barrel flipped over backwards against the small stand on the trail.

DD, it appears from the pictures that the mortar is intended to be fired sans wheels only. ANY angle with wheels would make it a poor candidate for keeping it in battery or to stand near when discharged.

Bend that axle up like a pretzel.

It's made from 3/4" solid round. Would need a much larger carriage if fired with wheels on.

You've got a lot of firsts here, Dom, and you did it again; you're the first to use the British travelling mortar carriage as the inspiration for producing your own version in steel, and it looks both fine and functional!

I am considering using this as a model to make the carriage for my bronze caronade style howitzer . It looks as though it will acomadate the underlug style 'trunion' very well .

Notice poor surface finish on the bronze

.... right now this is an issue as it takes alot of time to polish them out in bronze

, the problem is because of poor surface preperation as wax.

That issue will be resolved on the next piece , which will be another one of these ...

No not yet ,I worked on it today and yesterday . I have a call in for Tracy to take a couple of shots and send them to me ,then I will post them in the "New Bronze Thread" .

It is looking good though , The center section will be done by hand .......

I guess I told you at least 29 times that its easier to clean up the wax before casting than to clean up the cast bronze
