The Navy would need to mantain it's current manning levels for projection of sea power. The Navy also takes the Marines for rides as pointed out. In the current world climate the Navy/Marine team can be any where in the world quickly. Then is ussually followed up by the Army. The argument we can bomb anywhere in the world from the US, is only partialy valid. Unless you are bombing cities, you will most likely be hitting empty camps. You still have to have forward observers to hit these targets. The Coast Guard is an often over looked group why- becuase they are more of a law enforcement type than combat group. The Coast Guard does it's job and does it well.

Reduce over seas bases, keep the Navy at current deployment level, put US troops on our leaky border. Return the National Guard to there home states. Allow the Coast Guard to continue it's tasking of law enforcement and rescue operations. Increase the Intelligence services and Special Operations groups of the Military. Tell our friendly neighbors to the south "stop the drug trafficking and narco wars or we will be right over with 100K troops"
Let the cartels know they will be engaging the full might of the US military and tell the locals if you point them out you won't be in the middle of the fight.

Politicians need to tell the military - protect our foriegn trade intrests, by keeping the sea lanes open, and project a US presence abroad. Protect our borders from hostiles and criminals.
Then provide the funding and allow the proffesionals to do there jobs. The military then needs to go and do the job as we all know they can, and stop giving stupid press interviews.

I think that might solve a bit of the problem.

If we would put outposts on the border and tell Mexico that if they are attacked by drug cartels we would follow them back to their source and eliminate them---or they could elminimate them first--then follow up if needed---things would quiet down.

We had a certain general once who thought nothing of following Villa across the river....John J. Pershing.  We need to forget about protocol when Americans are being killed, as they are now by drug cartels and criminals.

Where have all the men gone who once served our country?

Post 35 is being reported to GBO administration for forum stalking.
Lets try and stay on topic.

The feds refuse to protect the boarders and ports. The states really have no choice but to step in. What’s ridiculous is places like San Fran. They have a local policy of not cooperating with the feds on illegal immigrants. Is this not an act of foreign policy as defined by the Libs? That is what they said about Brewer in AZ. They said only the Feds can manage foreign policy and therefore Brewer had no authority. Yet these same Libs say they have the local right/authority to ignore immigration policy/foreign policy. They are hypocrites.

All great ideas, and I agree with them, but I think we can forget about any of them happening with this administration at the helm. Especially when we have a President who sides with the drug cartels in Mexico.

I agree 100%....what does the term "shades of Lincoln's" mean?

If you all want to see what is really going on in Afghanistan, get your hands on the documentary "Restrepo"  put out by National Geographic.

I watched it last night....good example of screwing around and not fighting to win...Troops spent 3-4 years in this valley(can't remember name) 50 USA troops killed....then in 2010  pulled out completely.

Get them ALL home......the greatest show of support possible........plenty for them to do here....

Great post William !!!!

I have to agree, politicians are screwing around too much. If you want a succesfull military the president needs to issue an order and the military will follow it. An order like go stabilize Afghanistan and once it is done you can come home. You have my full support.
Not an order like I want you to go over to Afghanistan and use 1/10 of your operational capability and try not to offend anyone. Wars cannot be fought long distance by policy makers. They are up close and personal.

The Mexico situation needs to be treated like an active war. The cartels will kill anyone who they think might get in thier way. They are a cancerous plague in Mexico and our border states. I have to say screw what the world thinks get this problem under control. Use the might of the US military and quit screwing around. Let one or two of the cartels face a batilion of US Army and see what happens. The rest will run in fear.

If it becomes dificult to be a hardend criminal, there will be alot less of them.

The answer to where have all the military men gone is simple. They are still there and have always been there. It is not the military men who won't do the job that needs done, it is the politician who will not task them. Unfortunately it costs some money to move a batalion of military people. Unless tasked they cannot move. That is the price you pay for not having a military dictatorship.

I disagree that our presence in the Middle East is just about oil.  If that were the case, the present obamanation would have us out of there so fast it would make everyone's head spin.  In case anyone hasn't noticed, Hussein Obama is not a pro-oil guy.

I think he believes that if he were to back out of Afghanistan prematurely, he would get all the blame for loosing to the terrorists.  I'm still wondering when he is going to get Osama as he shot his mouth off about during his presidential campaign.  Maybe he intends to find him somewhere in South America, where I believe he is headed shortly.

SHADES OF LINCOLN
Lincoln took upon himself some conrtriaversial measures at the start of the Civil War--other presidents have done the same---When he made some arrests which were very close to illegal--but were not in view of the times. This is not a place to discuss those actions.
What i am saying is there should be a need for some close to drastict things done to preserve this nation. I am not suggesting concentration camps or anything alsong the measures taken by Nazi's in WWII.
My thoughts go to the extent of those folks who are supporting terrriorism from the US.
Send 'em back home on the first El Al flight out of town,
Hope this helps to those who questioned me.

Mr. Layton,
I thank you have a very good topic going here. Any comments made about Lincoln can be taken a couple different ways. To some he was a great president to others he wasn't.
I take it you thought he wasn't a great president and consider him to have done some pretty notorius things. All that aside, I think this topic is very good, alot of interesting comments about the current world events. As far as presidents go name one everybody loved.

My comments about Abe are neither pro or con--it is my opinion about what was. I have no respect or disrespect about what Abe did about writs of habeaus corpus--he did what any reasonable President would/should have done under the circustance.
History is not about defending a position it is about what happened.
Some would say the same things about GWB, Roosevelt, President Jackson and a number of others.
What Abe did was legal---even if it was not it is what he did. The outcome is what it is. Personally, looking at how history unfolded around the world afterwards--it was good for the US.

Back to topic, the Navy has sent ships towards Lybia to establish a US presence. I am not sure if Khadafi will fall before the end of the week. I think the State Department should get ready to do some very quick work either way this situation goes. Since our government loves foriegn oil there will be some major butt kissery regardless of Lybia's outcome. Seems the fire of freedom will sweep through the middle east, I wonder if it will be radicals taking over or an actual democracy.
