Opinion on softball mortar
« on: February 26, 2011, 01:55:11 AM »
I recently came across this: http://www.facebook.com/pages/manage/?act=61093049#!/album.php?id=546321549&aid=159427  The original intended projectile is softballs.  Any opinions on the use of an O2 cylinder for this?  Thanks!

My appologies.  Not my page, but I'll get those pics in a second.

Here's the pics.  I believe he used an E size O2 cylinder.

Looks like an E sized cylinder with PISS threaded brass valve body still in place, probably a modern spun chrome/moly cylinder body.  These tanks are only proofed for around 4000lb continuously applied pressure, not for shock induced loads.  I would be very leary of the design and it's mountings which appear somewhat flimsy.

Did he use compressed air to launch the softballs?

Would likely be perfectly OK for that.

Long stretch to even loosely fit this into the scope of this forum...might fit better over on the Exotic weapons board.

I didn't like the mount he had either.  It almost looked like the guy used hose clamps or something similar?  Also modified air regulator would go in favor of a solid plug of some type.  The carriage would be a wooden sled.  I envisioned only enough of a charge of powder to send a softball 100 yards.

The problem is the next owner might have more extravagant ideas.
