my first s&w. it's a 657-6. i picked it up recently. it now has a ultra dot on it. i've been researching it but i'm not finding anything about what the dash 6 means.

Can't I remember you posting pix of that 19 conversion in .44 apecial along with a 6&1/2" model 29 some time back or am I just getting old?

The Dash is the 6th rendition of the model.
Yours has the firing pin in the frame and the 657-1 would have the firing pin on the hammer for example.  As the gun is changed any the dash goes up.

Common knowledge, DAT19K, try any of the many S&W forums online. They're techiquically called Engineering changes.

I have a bunch of S&W guns.  I have had a few, some at the same time, multiple of the same models and you can see the older ones that are pinned and recessed have lower dashes than later models that are not pinned, and then some that are with out hammer pins that are even later - numbers.

Either way congratulations on the purchase. 
Check out some local gun shops and see if you can find a pair of the large target grips, either checkerd or smooth.
Makes the gun easier on the hand with the hot magnum loads.

Here is the only S & W I currently own. Bought it out of meanness to pick at some judge owners, but fell in love with it. Shoots 45 LC, 45acp, or 410 shotshells all in the same cylinder if you want to. Groups well at fifty yards and even does good with buck shot out to 25 yards
