Shot Quite a Bit Today
« on: February 26, 2011, 01:27:59 PM »
I ran about 15 rounds through the .375H&H BDL today off the bench.  I believe it is a MOA rifle using Remington factory ammo but I need to go back and shoot it more when I'm not tired.  No signs of problems of any kind.  The recoil was much less than I thought it would be.  It was less than the .300 Weatherby Mark 5 I was shooting.  The .270 ADL I put together shot quite well roughly 1" @ 100 yards.  I want to try other bullet weights in it.  The .223 BDL not so good but I was using the cheap Remington FMJ 55 grainers.  This rifle has a 1:14 twist I believe and I'm wondering if they are too heavy. At 25 yards (sighting in) the bullets seemed like they were slightly unstable when they passed through the target.

The 55gr. FMJ ammo shoots good in my 223 but it's a 1:12 twist. :-\  Like you say... the 14 twist might be a little too slow for the 55's.
What are you gonna use the 375 for? I bet it'd make a great hog gun. ;D

I'm not sure what I'll use the .375 for.  I just bought it for fun.

Swampy, The winchester "white box" 223 in 45gr. shot the best in my 223 with a 14" twist.   :)

Swampman, a good friend of mine recently got a 375 H&H. Ever since he was a kid he's wanted one. In fact, he got the dies for it when he was 12, he's 48 now!  :o

Anyway, he loves it! Last fall he shot a very big black bear with it, 560 pounds.

375 H&H sounds like a great round to me.

Swampman,
As you probably know the .375 H&H is a very versatile cartridge. I do not know if you have read any of the books written by Paul Matthews, but he was a strong proponent of the .375 H&H. With the right loads it was a whitetail hammer. I have one in the RugerTropical #1, it is a tack driver and I have only used it on elk! It works!! I normally use the Hornady RN 270 gr for elk!

Mine doesn't weigh anymore than my .30-06.  I thought about working up a 2000 fps load with the 235 grain flat point.  Thinking it would be the bomb.

Should be good on deer and hogs!!

Swampy...

The .375 H&H is "da bomb".  I bought mine over 30 years ago and is one of a very few guns that I would never sell or trade out of.  I used it almost exclusively for hunting black-tailed deer for the 7 years I lived in Alaska, just in case I ran into a cranky Brown bear.  I shot over 20 deer with it, given the 4 deer seasonal limit.  It truly is a versatile cartridge.

My most accurate handload was 80.5 gr of 4350 w/CCI 250 primers and the 300 gr. Sierra boat-tail.  This is a pleasant load to shoot and would result in a clover-leaf group if I did my part.

I never tried the 235 grain bullets, but did fire a lot of factory Winchester and Remington loads and they were more than adequate for hunting accuracy.

Enjoy your new toy.

My .223 ALD does not shoot worth a hoot with 55 grain bullets but does great with 40 grain V-Max.  The difference is quite dramatic.

I occasionally use 235 grain bullets out of my .375 on whitetails.  They are quite pleasant to shoot.

I'm glad to hear some of you had better luck with the lighter bullets in your .223 ADL/BDLs.

;) Swampman, sounds like you had a great day..the 375 is a neat caliber..I shoot my infrequently now..but it is accurate..kills antelope with less meat loss than a .25-06..as for the 1-14 223..My 223 is that twist as is my .222, both are super accurate with 55 grain Horn. in handloads..I even use 63 grain and 64 grain WW from turkey in both rifles..Very accurate, but it may not be the case with yours..mine given excellent accuracy with all those bullets.
