What type of gun owner are you?
« on: February 27, 2011, 02:54:59 AM »
I could not determine which was the right Forum for this post.  If it gets moved, that'll be OK.

I do not consider myself to be a hoarder of guns.  Neither am I a collector, as in the expectation of significantly increased value over time through guns kept pristine and never fired.

The guns I own are all used, frequently.  So far, if I purchase a gun, it never gets resold, traded, or leaves my possession.  I leave myself some wiggle room to change that perspective over time.

Some folks sell new guns.  Others buy and trade in used guns.  I can't find it in me to let one go after purchase.  I want to own them, use them, hold them, keep them ALL.  It is the more egregious form of "Adjacency Disease" when one owns land.  I don't want to own it all (land), just the adjacent pieces to mine...and so on, and so on.

Unfortunately most all of the good ones I've had over the years are long gone, wish I had them all back. Raising a bunch of kids and keeping bills paid gets pretty tough when crises come up, sickness, or injury. Guns turn fast money when hard times come around. They never seem to get replaced. Although I try to buy at prices that I am pretty sure I can sell for more or at least break even. I have sold or traded a few in the past, especially when I was young and had little money to blow. A couple of big regrets were letting go of a very nice custom 22-250 and a single action Colt .22. Since then I have only let go of guns I didn't end up liking for whatever the reason. Currently I own 13 firearms and reload. I mostly just shoot for fun with just a little hunting.

I don't know about that "adjacency" thing, but I still have every gun I've ever had--well, except for that Daisy Red Rider.  Anyway, I guess I wouldn't have bought them if I didn't want to keep them.  A couple of them that I bought, at the time I wasn't too sure they were any good, but they looked like they would be good trading stock.  They turned out to be too good to let go of.

I might be a kind of a hoarder, because most of my guns haven't been shot in years, but they are all ready to go if needed.  Heck, I haven't even looked at most of them in years.  Most, if not all of them have gone way up in value if one could get the going price for them.

If I buy it new it's mine for ever.  If I buy it used it's considered a barter item and will likely move on at some point.  I understand the "adjacency disease" theory completely and fall victim to it with other items but not guns.  I shoot what I own and have shot the barrels out of my share.  At that point they are rejuvenated and upgraded and shot some more.  Shoot, my truck is 15 years old and as good as new.  My 4 wheeler is 9 years old and probably better than new.  Been married to the same woman 39 years and she's  ???  well she's still here.   ;D ;D ;D

I have long ago purchased all the different types of firearms I need for the types of shooting and hunting I do.  Now days, I usually buy something if it appeals to me, and I can get it at a good price that I know I can make a few bucks on if I sell it.  Problem is, I seldom sell one, so that's why I have a long range deer rifle, a short range deer rifle, a cold weather deer rifle, a warm weather deer rifle, a rainy day deer rifle, a snowy day deer rifle, etc., along with back-ups in each category.....Well, you get the picture..lol

I hate to let a firearm go but have done so in the past. I'm not a collector, just a shooter and a hunter. So this is what drives my actions. If the gun truns out to be bad in the field, I might get rid of it. If it cant shoot, I will get rid of it.

set up to hit what i shoot at..i recently gave my 06 to a future son in law..
he went out an shot it and an marveled at how accurate the balistics chart was ,,that i had taped to the stock..
that kinda surprised me also ,as he has a totally different body type than my own.. he may eventually change it a bit to fit his arm length etc,but for now he said he was hesitant to fix something that was set up right..yall have a great day an may God bless....slim

I could have that adjacency thing. It starts out as a gun with a legitimate use, then the mental fine tuning starts.

Bought a Sig then started gathering an example of them all. Bought the 300mag turn bolt, soon I was wanting a selection of smaller and larger chamberings. Picked up an 1895 Marlin, dang but every other Marlin started calling me. One AR , and for some reason all I want to do is dress it up like a big, man Barbie, it hasn't called for siblings. I'm fixin' to get a single action pistol and already know I'll be housing several of these things in the future.

I just wish there were more hunting opportunities for me. One elk season = one rifle. One deer season = one rifle, maybe one pistol, and maybe one ML. I hate leaving one in the house and hunting the other.

I don't understand how you can get by without about fifteen or so guns.

I have a few favorites I keep,  a few I experiment with, a few that are strictly trade material,a few that are odd balls, a few to pay bills in really tough times, and a few Pops gave me that won't be traded or sold.

I'm kind of all over the place. I have guns that I bought for a specific purpose, for the collector value though I really have no intention of selling them and some just because I admired them andwanted to have them.

So I guess I'm kind of a collector/historian/hunter/target shooter/hoarder that also believes in self defense. ;).

Guns are pretty much tools to me.  I can't say I miss any that I ever sold or traded off.  Maybe one of these days the old woman will land that Wally World greeter job and I can keep a few more of them around. ;D ;D   Like mentioned above, I wish we had more hunting opportunities around here.

I've traded away many, many guns. Sometimes it was because I wanted something else, but didn't want to spend the cash... other times needed cash, had to see a couple. If I could do it over and was able, I'd keep them all.

Right now, I'm down to one centerfire rifle, a muzzleloader, a shotgun, and a .22 - but that does pretty well take care of everything I need, hunting-wise. I'll look forward to acquiring some more milsurp sometime soon...

Young and foolish is the only excuse for lettingsome go in my youth---course then, I could hardly afford more than one at a time.
I have let some go, back the, without a second thought. Sometimes i wish i had some of them back.
I havent traded, except For one, in the last 30/40 years. I kinda  wish I still had it.
I am not a hoarder or collector--like the wife of 48 years--I pick what I want and tend to keep 'em.
I like good guns and that is what I own, primarily---variety seems to be kicking in late in my life---I am talking about guns here, not women.

I use what I have, and haven't bought a new (to me) for a year or so.  That one was a Marlin 336 in decent shape, and It's the only 30-30 I have that I haven't fired yet. I bought it because it was made in North Haven CT and down the road that might mean something.  I've parted with a couple pieces, but those were gifts to close relatives as they were something that they could not only use effectively themselves, but pass on down in the family.

I'm a horder of guns.  I traded one once, and sold the one I traded for.  Have regretted those transactions ever since.  I usually buy one every other month or so.  That's why I have four vaults full and got them standing in almost every corner of the house.  Got two pistols laying here on the computer desk right now.  Wife says "Wow be to the man that kicks in our front door".  She likes to keep them all loaded.  No matter where you are in the house there is two or three in reach at all times.

Everyonce in a while I find one I have never seen before.  I ask where it came from.  The wife says she got it from a GI that was moving and did not want to hassle with taking it with them.  She is as bad as I am.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

My son and I are close and we own and share many firearms. We've bought many over the years, for investments, but have sold every one such firearm. Every one of our firearms that we now own has a purpose. Most are for hunting; Shotguns for turkey, centerfires for regular Firearms Deer Season, Inlines for Muzzleloader Season, rimfires for small game and varmints, firearms my son carries as a Certified Executive Bodyguard, firearms I carry as my CCW weapons, Home Defense and one 1860 Colt Old Army .44 that gets handed down from me to my son.

Bought new and used, sold some, never swapped, regretted a number of them when letting them go.

Never made any money on any but one. I still have more then I need and my need of them is getting less every season.

Coming down to minimum use would be one centerfire, the cartridge/cal type wouldn't matter, as any I have now would be adequate and maybe a 22 rim.
There are two compound bows and one crossbow hanging around unused for years as well.

The crossbow may be resurrected since crossing the border is no hassle with them.

Usually buy them and keep them.  Sold a couple and regretted selling them.  Traded one or two to get rid of something that I didn't have a use for and to get something I wanted.  Tend to keep more than I get rid of though.

I guess I'm a "utilitarian" gun owner. I no longer like to have them just for the sake of having, have had hundreds over the years after being in a position of easy aquisition, and like my many old hot rods....miss some but don't long for them.
I do like having a gun for any realistic need, hunting or defense, and feel I have that covered in the one's on hand.

Right now I'm a wanna be gun owner,  wanna have lots, but just don't have the money.  Eventually I would like to get to the point that I have several to just take to the range and plink with, as well as have some to tinker on.  I really couldn't be a "collector" as many collector guns aren't really meant to be shot, and if it was in my hands there is no way it wouldn't be shot.
