Just picked up Super Blackhawk...
« on: February 27, 2011, 06:59:23 AM »
Just picked a gently used Ruger Super Blackhawk. It cost me $349. Does that seem like a good price? It is a 1976 model from what I can tell. Very little wear on the gun, no cylinder drag mark, just a smigde of blueing missing from the muzzle, action seemed crisp. It has a 7.5 barrel, blued, unfluted cylinder and square back trigger guard. Hopefully this gun will be a good hunting handgun, looking for accuracy out to 50 yards, should be a upgrade from my Vaquero I hope. Any thoughts?

I think you have done well, considering the description you gave, it sounds almost new and if I was looking for another Super Blackhawk I would be happy to find one like that in that price range.  They are excellent hunting handguns and will easily handle any 44 magnum load.  I shot and hunted with one of those for years and they are a excellent choice.

Accuracy - very good.  I shot 200 yd metallic silhouette with mine and had no trouble at the 50 yd line.

Midway USA has Hogue one piece grips on sale. Money well spent for your SBH. It made shooting my 45 Colt BH with HEAVY loads feel like shooting cowboy loads with the stock grips. Made me MUCH MORE accurate with my BH.

I think you`ll love it. I have an old SBH 3 screw that has sold sever of them. The biggest compleaint I have about them is there trigger, and that can be easily fixed. My longest kill on deer with mine abt 135 yrds. with iron sights. Mine Rugers all have orginal grips and are all 3 screws, but have a good friend with a new model and the Hoge grips and they do seem to reduce recoil alot.

Get you some Unique and some 240 grain cast lead SWCs.  Eight grains of Unique is the perfect load.

You did good!!.. the older SBH's with the square trigger guard are one of the best hunting revolvers... super strong and they shoot real well... I started with mine when I was 14... I shot everything with it,  Use to shoot 8gr. of unique and 240cast boolits too. Just cause I reloaded and could shoot all day with this load and cheaper lead boolits. And the recoil was WAY easier to handle than the Redhawk that I had at the time

I tried all the fancy grip options and always returned to the factory woody's.. these allow the big revolver to just roll in your hand, no binding or friction like from pacs and no impact, like the wood contoured grips. The only pain I ever got from mine is the grooved trigger tends to make you trigger finger sore.

Good Gun! I've had mine since 1973 and have taken at least 5 deer in Al with it.  Favorite load is 180gr. Sierra JHP over H-110 or WW 630P.  I use the same load for my revolver and Ruger 44 Carbine.  Mine has Pachmayr grips that really helps with recoil, but it isn't as bad as a S&W 29 to start with.  Some like heavier bullets/SWC 240/245gr over Unique too.  I loaded some of those too and while very accurate, Unique left some burned powder flakes in the barrel even w/LP Mag primers. Not a big deal, I just found the ball powders to be cleaner IMHO/ & my gun.  Enjoy it, it is a great gun.

+3 on the 8gr Unique load with the SWC or the RNFP for general shooting. My first deer (with the SBH) caught a 240gr XTP ahead of 23.6 gr of 296 which was also a highly accurate load.
I bumped the charge on up to 24.2gr of the 296 and it seemed to shoot even better.

I have some 2400 with the Hornady 265 gr FP Interlocks all in componet form for more testing.

Turned out I got a SBH but not the one I thought I would be getting out of layaway. I inherited my grandfathers SBH stainless model, it has a Leupold m8 2x scope and is MAG NA PORTED also has hogue grip. First time I shot it  I got a 4 inch group at 60 yards off a modified rest. The load was 200 grain Nosler with 27.5 grs H110 and cci mag primer. Very loud gun but recoil wasn't too bad. Look forward to doing some more testing with it.
