Steel Heads
« on: February 27, 2011, 10:15:40 AM »
I'm going to start loading my own shotshells. When I told a friend of mine my plan he gave me tons of hulls from his clay shooting. As best as I can tell most the hulls he gave me have a steel head. Can these hulls be reloaded? My plan to get started is to use a Lee Load All that I purchased. Can I count on any sucess with the Lee and the steel heads? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I reload only brass I do recall someone saying they reload the steel ones I don't know how long they last before they crack. If you can get tons of them I say load them a few times then s-can them and load a new batch.

Most of what I reload (15,000 per year) are Gun Clubs, which are steal, even the brass colored ones are steel.  I have never had one crack.  The plastic goes before the steel.  Generally  4 or 5 reloads.

Of course I like the premium hulls when I can find them.

The Lee Loadall will work Ok with steel heads. I didn't really care for forcing the sizing collar over the steel case head with the plastic reloader, so I bought a MEC supersizer to resize first. Thought it might cause less stress on the reloader. The Lee didn't last long enough to try before a MEC Grabber came in to use.

I rubbed a light finger/thumb film of case lube around the base on a couple last weekend. I am obviously not a volume loader!

Remington STS Premier and Nitro, and Winchester AA still use brass heads.
