Interesting OLD Thread
« on: February 28, 2011, 06:16:42 PM »
Hey guys, I was rambling around way back in the dust heep (Page 11  ;)) and I came across this old thread and I found it quite interesting. I can relate completely. It's from 2005 but it still holds true today.
Ironfoot was the only one who posted there that I recognized. You remember this one Iron?   :)  Are any of these guys still around?

The first thing I noticed was the way they referred to other people. No insults, no yelling (CAPS), and a very civil tone about the whole thing. I wonder if they were all older men.  ???

SBG,

If you'll allow an off topic, well tangent observation to your statement, meant with no disrespect but to allow input from my observations over the years.
I may have missed some event that stimulated this post, thinking that I did, since civility seems to be the matter at hand.
I used to believe that age and wisdom went hand in hand.  I have seen that many aged ones are not wise just as many young men are wise.
My conclusion would be that the vintage of the man, just like the vintage of a good wine with aging and purpose results in a mature example.

Aristotle is quoted as having said, "Its is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."
I need to be reminded of this time to time.

As my friend and brother WL says,
Blessings

What statement would that be, littlecanoe?

The only thing that "stimulated" this post is that I found an old thread interesting and thought others might also. The fact that it actually showed people from both North and South having experienced the same age old friendly gesture of waving at a total stranger as they passed on the open road was what I found most interesting. I still experience this every day, and most people from the big cities find it quite strange.

This post merely demonstrates how people from the North and South actually got along in this forum without trashing each other for the pure spite of it. I was struck by the way they expressed their thoughts without any harsh words or sentiments.

Being civil doesn't mean you have to agree with someone. It doesn't mean you have to kiss up to them. It simply means that, when a retort comes to mind that is emotional in nature rather than an advancement of an argument, you do not say it. Attacking people serves no purpose, no matter how indignant or self-righteous one might feel.

This post is not aimed at any individual in this forum, as I have named none but ironfoot, and that's strictly because he was the only person in the thread that I recognized. It is, however aimed at us ALL, to show we can demonstrate civility if we so desire. Those men, regardless of age, had it down pat to the point we could all learn from them.

Aristotle also said, "Men acquire a particular quality by constantly acting a particular way... you become just by performing just actions, temperate by performing temperate actions, brave by performing brave actions."

And then there's this one...
"Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured."
-Mark Twain

Thanks for the blessings.

SBG,
I'm a bit sleepy while reading right now but I do believe that I wasn't specific to make note of the sentence "I wonder if they were all older men. ".  This is the statement that I was singling out.  I apologize for the implication that you were pointing out individuals or baiting.  That wasn't my intent.

That sentence struck me as I'd referenced the idea of age and reason in a conversation with an 85 yo man today.  This is a fella who has aged as a good wine and become wise compared to many his age.  In agreeing with Aristotle the ability to rise above the emotion of argument and consider facts on both sides is not an innate ability but one that is acquired.

May we all enjoy the blessing of discussion here.

One can take offesnce or not. I read and I saw. I choose not to take offence.
Caps are important and I find this a miniscule thing to pick as a battle line.

Those are some good points to look at lc. You are absolutely right in that age doesn't always bring wisdom with it.  :)

wl, take offense at what?   ???  What is there for anyone to be offended by?

Who do you think has picked a battle line?    ???
When a person uses all CAPS in a post (in computer terms, because it is text only and no voice inflexion involved) it indicates yelling at someone. In what way would you find that useful? Nobody needs to be yelled at. It is a basic courtesy.
I found an old thread interesting... If you didn't, there is no need for you to even comment.
Move on to something else.

I was not aware you have been using caps wl. I mentioned caps as a general reference, not in singling anyone out.  :D

That's not what I'm talking about, wl. I'm talking about somebody putting most, or all, of their post in caps. Titles or headings are fine in caps, because it can draw attention to it more easily. But if the body of a post is all caps, it is considered yelling. Even if it's just a sentence or two. A word here and there is just fine, like headings and titles, it shows emphasis in the absence of an actual voice being spoken.

Hope that clears it up a little.
I'm feeling a bit under the weather so I think I'm gonna turn in early tonight.
If y'all don't mind, hold down the fort for a little while.

SBG you'll have to forgive WL and his CAPS fetish. I fear he sees goblins alround at the mere thought of pointing out common courtesy would be better served by just letting go yet he sees offense where none is given.

I do find your comments both refreshing and true. Also don't you find it interesting and somewhat sad that your points are not fully seen by all today going by the responces forthcoming.

You will, I hope, take note of an addition to my sig. Which I owe in large part to you and your friends help, thank you so very much.

Good day and God bless, Gentlemen.

You do and it showed by your reaction to the word CAPS
I do speak my mind as well as hold no grudge, said you should be forgiven and meant it all the way to my bones.

Had you not reacted as you did when the man was merely saying everyone should be as civil as they used to be I would have never commented. Yet because your insistance to be "Different" and "Above" all others stands out like a sore thumb.

Yet I forgive you and love you too as I do all Gods creations

May God bless you Williamlayton and give you Grace.

Why slim, I am his friend and only wish WL well. If I were to ever meet him it would be with open arms, a smile, and a handshake. Dislike and hate only eats at the person who is doing it and at 70 I have no time to waste on such foolishness and negativeism.

May God bless you also.

Does a friend who sees his friend with his zipper down remain quiet or point out the mistake? My concern was for all my readers at that time, thus:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_caps

Quote
Discussion regarding the use of all caps for headlines centers on the greater emphasis offered by all caps versus the greater legibility offered by lower case letters.[3] Colin Wheildon conducted a scientific study with 224 readers who analyzed various headline styles and concluded that "Headlines set in capital letters are significantly less legible than those set in lower case."[4]

Quote
With the advent of the internet, all caps became closely identified with "shouting" or attention-seeking behaviour. As a result, netiquette generally discourages the use of all caps when posting messages online. However, in cases where it is not possible to bold text, all caps can be used as an alternative to bolding.

Quote
A 1955 study by Miles Tinker showed that “all-capital text retarded speed of reading from 9.5 to 19.0 per cent for the 5 and 10 minute time limits, and 13.9 per cent for the whole 20 minute period.”[10] Tinker concluded that, “Obviously, all-capital printing slows reading to a marked degree in comparison with Roman lower case.” [11]

Tinker provides the following explanations for why all capital printing is more difficult to read:

Text in all capitals covers about 35 per cent more printing surface than the same material set in lower case. This would tend to increase the reading time. When this is combined with the difficulty in reading words in all-capital letters as units, the hindrance to rapid reading becomes marked. In the eye-movement study by Tinker and Patterson, the principal difference in oculomotor patterns between lower case and all capitals was the very large increase in number of fixation pauses for reading the all-capital print.[12]

All caps text should be eliminated from most forms of composition, according to Tinker: “Considering the evidence that all-capital printing retards speed of reading to a striking degree in comparison with lower case and is not liked by readers, it would seem wise to eliminate such printing whenever rapid reading and consumer (reader) views are of importance.

WL shall do as he wishes, which is his right, and I will have nothing more to say in the matter.

BTW, WL if ever in my area you have a standing invite to a place where they serve the finest real Key Lime Pie in all this land. And I've tasted it from the Keys all the way to the North where they use lemons and green food color. Sad to say those poor people have no idea what they are missin
