What are your favorite CW long guns and or carbines/repeaters?

1859 Sharps, 1860 Spencher, and of course the 1860 Henry. The Springfields and Enfields had the bulk of the long range infantry chores; nevertheless, there is nothing like a cavalry trooper armed with a sword, two horse pistols, two revolvers and an 1859 Sharps carbine. It takes a lot of courage to gallop a full speed into a fray where there is close-in one- on-one fighting.

I really respect and admire the cavalry units even in todays combat forces.

For close in cavalry work, I like the musketoons, then the Sharps. For far out work I always liked the 1841 Mississippi/1863 Remmington.Not that the infantry Springfields or the Enfields were bad, just too damn long and not anymore accurate than the Sharps or the Mississippi.

Well, I own a Henry, so first and foremost I will say the Henry rifle. I also have an 1860 army with a removeable shoulder stock. At 75 yards, this little carbine was just as accurate as the afore mentioned Henry. Okay, I was the shooter, but I got 2.5 groups out of both. After that, I go for the weird. There was a turret rifle called the Porter rifle, I am not sure any saw service. The 3rd model had a revolving turret that could be replaced with another loaded turret rather quickly, much like the remmington revolver. The whole apparatus was advanced by a lever, making it look like a Henry rifle with a ferris wheel in the middle. The problem was a possible Chain Fire. I heard a rumor that Porter himself was giving a demonstration to the Army when a chain fire occured, one of the misfired balls hit him in the head, killing him. So, no army contracts, neat looking rifle though.

I have an 1858 Remmington carbine that I like , it is a fast pointer and easy to reload on horseback. I always wanted the 1860 Colt version but can never seem to find one.

For the carbine I would choose a Smith , and I too like the mississippi rifle for the rifle. Someone mentioned the 1863 remington, I assume they were referring to the zouave, which I believe was never issued during the war.

I lumpted the 1863 Rennington in with the 1841 just for the purpose to cover it, but yes your correct, the Remmington was not issued until the very end of the War and very I mean chicken lips few.hehehehe

Hey, I am going to mention another carbine that I just read about. It was a Lemat carbine. I don't think many were made, or made it through the blockade, but I think it would have been an impressive cavalry weapon. Here is a link to a brief discription/pic.

Hi, I have not posted here in a while because of all the political crap. I think there are better things to fight about. (Like is the 1858 Remington a better gun than the 1860 Colt.) One gun I am having alot of fun with lately is an Enfield musketoon replica, with it's short barrel and fast twist, it is a real close range powerhouse, and can still lob a huge chunk of lead a long way.

Yes the musketoon was one hell of a weapon close up, that is why it was the mainstay of the Confederate Cavalry , it was quick and packed a wallup and it was short, a bit lacking in range, but who needs range in the Cavalry.

I also like the 1842 smoothbore, you really know you have done something when you turn in a 48 XXX shooting a smoothbore.

I'm very fond of my '53 Enfield. Also like my '42 Springfield. The old punkin roller is very effective out to 100 yards or so and can also be used as a foraging gun. Loaded with shot it has to be the world's most heavy duty fowling piece. And, to my eye, it is a handsome firearm as well.

My personal favorites:
1855 Model Harpers Ferry Rifle Musket
1860 Spencer Carbine
1858 Starr Carbine
I thought these were "cool" and even today they are great shooters and everyone at a range wants to give them a go.
Still looking for a 1842 Model .69 cal. Rifled Musket to add to the group.
