.45-70
« on: March 01, 2011, 01:23:14 PM »
I'm looking to load some rounds for thge .45-70, and was planning on using 300 gr swaged bullets with Trail Boss powder.
Does anyone here have experience with T.B.? I'm looking to create a low recoil plinking round, with reasonable accuracy. The gun is an 1885 Winchester single shot.

Hodgdon has TB 300gr cast bullet data on their website.

I went to the website and found the recipes. Unfortunately my range day has to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. When I finally make it to the range I'll post a full report.

Don't feel bad,  my last three range trips have been postponed due to weather, good weather and opportunity don't seem to be happening on the same day lately.  :(

I finally made it to the range today and with 14.0 gr Trail Boss the gun was very nice to shoot, and pretty accurate to boot.
However, the factory Federal 300 gr jacketed rounds kicked like an angry mule! Trail Boss is definately my friend.

Huh :o ??? :o
Try the "Black Hills" cowboy 405 grainers if you want factory stuff to make empty cases from without being brutalized.

Trail Boss sounds better and better the more I hear about it.  I will warn you though, the most vicious round I have fired from a .45-70 has been 300 gr cast bullet, and 65 grains of 3F with a magnum primer lighting it off.

I just started with trail boss I called Hodgdons and talked to a tec and he told me how to use it. I was loading for a 444 marlin in a contender barrel 44mag re chamber and I started with 13 grns and a 240 grain bullet, not cast, shoots great very little blast and recoil. Now I am using it in my Marlin 1895 45-70 with a speer 300 grn hollow point and 17 grns TB. Using the info on their web site on how to figure your max load, 20.3 grns would be your max load or at least it is on the bullet that i am using, your bullet may seat deeper in order to get your overall length, all that has to be taken into account when you are using this powder. I use a 502 RCBS scales and I check it before I start to make sure it is balanced and I weigh every load, I just dont trust a powder charger a little slow but I am not in a hurry.
I find very little recoil with this load. If your load kicks like a mule, check your over all lenth and your scales. I have tried several diff cal. with TB an they are all mild on recoil. Oh by the way on my contender hand gun super 14 barrel rechamber to 444 marlin I am using a 240 grn bullet with 14 grns TB and I find the recoil about like a 44 special.
