MMMMM, either sardines, smoked oysters, or smoked baby clams with louisiana hot sauce on saltines. Good man food.

Salted Fish in a wooden Bucket ?? That takes me back to Childhood days1 I believe it was Salted Herring. LOVED that stuff too. If I remember right, Mom would soak it in fresh water and coated it with...something??

Mama would batter them in flour and fry them up for breakfast with eggs.....I can almost taste them now!

best with spoon bread and sliced maters , yum ! dip then whole in egg then rake thru. 3 parts flour 1 part corn meal with seasoning then place in hot grease . yum. Eat bones and all !

Never really looked at the brand. Ritz crackers and a beer, and away we go. I liked smoked oysters also. If I wasn't getting ready to cook dinner, I might just open a can up and have a go. gypsyman

I too like smoked oysters but have never had smoked, or kipperred herring, now I want some. I've never had anything smoked that I didn't like. Well, going to kroger tomorrow and will be getting some more sardines in mustard, all I have in the closet are in oil. POWDERMAN.

Also, a brand called "Sultan's" from Morocco are great. Their sardined with chili peppers has two or three hole chili peppers in oil and are outstanding. The peppers are even a little crispy for a good touch.

Now you've done it, I have a craving for sardines, and the only thing in the pantry is a couple of cans of Bumble Bee sardines. Oh well, I guess that's what I'll have for lunch.

When my beagle was a pup, I gave him a small piece of sardine which he dropped on the floor then he tried to roll in! I almost choked seeing him do that. He has developed a sophisticated taste over the years and now enjoys a bit of sardine now & then.

When I read this I busted out laughing - because my Golden Retriever did exactly the same thing...... Last year at our camp one of the guys opened up a can of sardines and drained the oil onto the ground. About 5 minutes later my GR came around, nose caught the scent of the oil and he dropped and rolled in it like he was putting out a fire! Man that dog stunk for a week after that.

After trying several brands in the past, I returned to the U.S. brand 'BEACH CLIFF'. Ate them as long as I can remember, and developed a taste for them I guess. I buy them in Oil and Mustard. Those in oil get mustered anyways ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Sardines, man that's grub o the gods. And healthy too. Aside from the occasional meal, I take a can fo the lowest quality sardines I can find and mix em with bread to make a chum for fishing, then I'll catch some live ones in a cast net for bait. Get some bigger ones and put em in a grilling basket and put em on the grill. Good eatin. Vastly under rated.

King Oscar is my favorite brand!
When my daddy and I used to go squirrel hunting we had premium saltines, mustard, sardines. and rat cheese for our lunch!
Our dogs liked`um too!!
Every once in a while we have fresh green onions from the garden to top off the meal.

About 25 years ago when I was a young missionary in Columbia SA a group of use were stranded in the jungle by an earth quake. All we had to eat was a large can of sardines and a pot of rice. I still get a wonderful feeling of relief every time I have sardines and rice.

Not a bad idea, where Most of us live, if we have an outdoor stash..cave, cabin or whatever, regular cans of food would be prone to freezing. Although I haven't checked, it seems sardines in oil would weather the sub-zero stuff OK..

A slight diversion..scold me if you wish...
In another post I mentioned a product which not everyone uses... So..LIMBURGER CHEESE do youi eat it and how do you use it ?
I have read that there is only one producer of genuine aged Limburger cheese left in the US..

tomato soup kills the fishy smell and most of the taste.

Years ago we were hunting upstate N.Y. in the Adirondaks. Late in the afternoon we ran across a guy that had gotten turned around a little (for 2 days). He was tired and extremely hungry. We told that we would take him to his truck and give him something to eat. Well all we had left between us was a can of sardines. Hungry as he was he said " thanks but I will get somethng to eat when I get back to town"

That does it ! This place is addictive......... Although I do like Sardines occasionally, I just got back from Wal-Mart shopping with my wife. Before we left I headed for the grocery dept. and picked up 8 cans of it......
