Sardines

Who eats them and who loves them. What brand and what flavor do like? I like the LA hot sauce variety for a quick lunch. Lightly smoked in olive oil is good too!

My favorite was Holmes but they are no longer in business.  The La hot sauce style is not too bad but also prefer lightly smoked and salted packed in OIL.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

I just buy the skinless and boneless in olive oil. I used to by King Oscar brand, but can't find them anymore. Whatever skinless and boneless brand I can find are usually good. I think its the quality of the olive oil that changes the taste. I eat them mostly with saltine crackers.
Sardines are a food you either love or you can't even stand the smell of them. They are very good for you though.

  Some sardines are good..especially the mustard ones.  More than sardines, I like the smoked kipper snacks..

I don't think there is such a thing as good sardines and bad sardines; I think its just how hungry are you.
The same brand will taste better coming out of a little country gas station after an all day hunt than it will coming out of your pantry two hours after Thanksgiving dinner.

Ironglow:  I like those smoked Kipper snacks right out of the can, the blind robins as you call them - good on Italian bread, too.  As for the Sardines - King Oscars are really my favorite, on Rye with a slice of onion.  After I have one or two of those sandwiches I never have to worry about gettin' hit on for a date or becoming involved in a long winded conversation (lol)..

Oh yuck.My Dad used to eat them.He's been gone since 1991 and I think I can still smell them.Gotta hunting buddy that like smoked oysters.Same thing on them.I make him set outside while he eats them.I keep telling him the deer can small them too.

I like them. I look for country of origin on the packaging as I don't buy anything from third world countries.

When my beagle was a pup, I gave him a small piece of sardine which he dropped on the floor then he tried to roll in! I almost choked seeing him do that. He has developed a sophisticated taste over the years and now enjoys a bit of sardine now & then.

You're correct on that steelbanger..Sardines should come from places like New England, Nova Scotia or the Scandanavian countries..

I usually get the local generic brand (HEB- Hill Country Fare). They come from Morocco which is a popular sardine country. Italy and Morocco are supposed to be the two best sardine areas. Hard to find American sardines anymore as most are imported. There is one national brand called "Commanders". They come from Poland but are smoked in light oil and are very good. Sardines are considered a "Wonder Food", because they are so healthy. If you ever find the "John West" brand from I think Maine, they have great canned fish products. Their wood smoked herring with cracked pepper is amazing and will make a complete meal.

I never could warm up to them. But we used to feed them to the boys in our scout troop. They got to where they loved them.

Never had 'em... not much on smoked fish.  I like it cooked.  Since I don't like smoked fish I probably wouldn't like the sardines either since they are raw right?  Not that I wouldn't eat them in a social setting to not offend a host or in an emergency but I probably won't ever buy any for myself.

 Yes, they are cooked in Brine or Steamed Cooked. Delicious either way.... ;D  They make a pretty good .65 cent meal. Great for those that have a "mobile office". Just pop open the can and enjoy!!

Sardines. Don't eat 'em as much as I used to. I like king oscar brands. For the other smoked stuff like oysters and that, I wait until I go to the beach for the fresh stuff Oysterville,WA. Get there early (depending on the tide) and get the steamer clams just about right off the scow.

Sardinia, yep, been their twice, good people, good food.  ;D

land between the lakes. Sure did like going there when I was at FT Campbell. Swimming, fishing, or just messing around. I have often wondered about going back that way to see how much its changed. Western KY or Tenn, sure did like the place.

I had a can of the smoked in olive oil today. Sardines have more calcium than milk, more protein than beef, Omega 3's, and nutrients not found in everyday foods. Supposed to be optimal for brain and heart.  They are very low in mercury. Most wild caught fish are not. Very superior to tuna in nutritional value, so I read. They are my new favotite snack  (:

Love 'em. Sardines are good food, especially fresh sardines if you can get them. They are said to promote gout.

 I love any sardine, from oil to mustard hot sauce, tiny little king oscars to the generic bluegill sized ones. The gout thing stands to reason cause about all my favorites seem to. Steak, beer, oysters, ice tea, aspearigus, now sardines, next it'll be bacon.

I love Sardines, I usually buy King Oscar in Olive Oil.

Sadly, they recently closed the last Sardine plant in Maine. It used to be a big industry in Maine years ago. There is still a Maine based company called Bar Harbor Foods that sells great wood smoked sardines but I think the packing plant is in Canada.

Not only are sardines good, but smoked herring as well.  And what happened to those salt fish they used to sell from a barrel?

Went hiking recently, and met up with some folks, young yuppie types around lunch.  They backed off when I pulled out my tins of sardines and bag of crackers..... ;D
