On a dryland set (one where you can't drown the animal) I wack the animal across the snout with a heavy stick. This stunns the animal. I then stand on the shoulder and neck. Put lots of pressure into the shoulder area with your heel. The animal will be dead with in a few minutes.

On your water sets either do the same or make drowning sets. I recommend drowning sets for all muskrats, mink, and beaver. These animals will twist out of a trap most of the time if not quickly drowned.

Upland man,Zachs wacking method is one I wouldnt reccomend.We as trappers are always being watched.while a sout rap may do the trick--#1 it looks bad especially if you miss several times--from a distance it does not look like a quick clean dispatch,matter of fact it looks bad.#2 you end up with a mess when skinning the head region.
For live rats and mink I use a 110 on a pole,for coon and such I use a 160 on a pole.At times I trap in the metropolitan twincities area surrounde by almost 5 million people.You better present a real good image in those circumstances.
One time my friend mike and I were trapping a metro area lake,we took ,mink coon,and rats that day.any mink coon or rat that was alive was dispatched with the gripper on a pole.
As we returned to the truck,there were 50 bird watchers with their scopes.they had been watching us the whole time. Not one word was spoken against us.Every dispatch they saw was with us using the pole--what do you think would have been said if we had used a club. Tom

DANG! that is an excellent point of view, and an excellent illustration of an excellent point of view. Way to open my eyes. I'm still going to have to use my EDD, (Easton Dispatch Device) on coyotes though, unless I could mount a 330 on a broomstick.

How do you get a yote to stick his head in the #220? Dont they try to attack it from the edge?

Tim,like anything practice is required.At times any animal may try to knock aside the gripper.With practice you will anticipate the moves they will make.The more you use it the better it works. Tom

That makes sense. When I first started choking down coons cats and fox I had a world of a time getting their head in the catch pole noose. After time I learned if one goes slow keeping the whole pole low to the ground the noose is easily slipped over the head....same thing with a #220 I imagine.

Bog: This is a method that my buddy taught me. He has been trapping for 16 years now so I just took to doing it here lately. I used to shoot them with a .22 but that was too bloody for me. I might try the method you were talking about.

i like to use a round steel poll to pop them in the head with. it dont mess up the fur ,its not bloody and its quick. :twisted:

I have never used a snapper on skunks.Skunks have either been injected or shot in the heart lung region with a .22 short.Either way has provide aromatic free dispatch. Tom

If you want to use a 220 coni to dispatch yotes take yr coni on pole plus a stick thru coni (triggers to side) and get yote to grab stick and when yote does that push coni on head ... I use this method when snare poling yotes to take alive... As soon as yote grabs stick his mind is on that and i slip noose over his head easily...
