I went to see my Doc yesterday and in the waiting room was a fellow who wanted to chat. No problem friendly conversation helps the time pass. His chat was about how the company he works for took away the electric scooters to move around the plant, how the company would no longer provide free coffee for breaks, the company was reducing having a pay freeze for 2 years and not going to hire anyone new. The fellow thought all this was wrong and since he had rights he didn't have to put up with this anymore. He was going to try to get the Doc to write him a note for high blood pressure to get some medical retirement. When I asked him if it was better to get rid of scooters, coffee, freeze pay for 2 years or lay people off which would be better. He immediately responded he knew his rights. After I told him yes you do have rights, your boss may tell you -you can keep working under the new guidelines or find a new job. The company may be trying to protect the workers they got. The guy wouldn't give ground to reason at all, he thought junior people should be layed off to protect him. Well that is his right, if he worked for me I would do my best to get him headed for the gate.

I checked and rechecked that old document and never did find were anyone had the right to a job, or the right to belong to a union, or the right to any benefits, only fools that can not read or do not wish to face the fact that they are not suppose to be taken care of by the government think that they have any rights beyond those listed. You do have the right to the pursuit of happiness, but no where does it say you have the right to catch it.

Without goping into the politics of Unions yes or no, I would pose this question.
Was there a current contract in force between the employer and the Union that provided these items in question?

No contract in place to provide those items. The company owners are doing there best to stay afloat and keep there employees on the pay roll.

I have no problem with unions, I havent belonged to one.

I think luxury items should go before workers do. I believe if I work hard and do good work my employer should try to keep me employeed as best they can.

I always thought that as an employee, I should make myself so valuable that the management would kiss my butt to keep me happy. And I belonged to a union for all of my working career. Hey, it worked for me.

If you are so valuable management kissed your butt, then you did not need a union! In my past experience the union only helped those too lazy to do a good job.

Unions have a place but they often get to much power. In right to work states they have limited power and it works well enough. If the union walks off the job and the workers get replaced then they weren't worth paying the wage they demanded. On the other hand if they are they get their wages raised. They are good on getting safer working conditions. They could police bad workers not protect them and they would gain much respect.

At the height or bottom of the crash, depending on your view, Unions and Employers in Germany agreed to shorten work hours for all of the employees so as not to lay any of them off as regular seniority rights are normally practiced. Seems to me a good way to help everyone in those circumstances.

While I'm at it, it is common there to have a " council" of both Employer and Union reps which have sufficient access to the financial picture of the Business to discuss and bargain for realistic wages/benefits in upcoming contracts.

this reminds me of two guys i talked to that worked for general motors,. theses two would argue that they didn't work for G.M. they worked for the UAW union. well G M moved out and they are out of a job but will still say they work for the union. so figure

In my area, the coal regions of NE PA, years ago the unions were really needed, but in this day and age they have outlived their usefulness. My way was to be as good as I could be and earn my paycheck, making the company want to keep me around, and it worrked for me all of my working career, I used to love when another worker came up to me and said your making us look bad, and my answer was no your making yourself look bad, I'm making myself look good, and there were alot of perks that went along with that, Ie extra smoke breaks and such that the bosses never took notice of, and if your thinking that my nose was brown, believe me it wasn't. but their are alot of so called workers out there that depend on the union to keep them from getting fired, to me they are a worthless bunch that are only helping to keep this country down, demanding high wages they didn't earn, and playing follow the leader. But my biggest gripe about them is they vote and I'll bet you can guess what party they are undieingly in favor of .......................................steg

Steg you didn't hijack the post. I think what you are saying is in the spirit of my thread.

I believe an employee should try to prove themselves invaluable by hard work, not by butt kissery. I know as a supervisor, I cut everything I can before getting rid of someone due to budget. I have let people go for non performance. My boss told me one day, I need someone who can make the hard decisions, if you can't, well I can find someone who will.
That was my clue to step up. I have never asked anyone on my team to do anything I wouldn't. When my boss tells me to cut 50k from my budget, I don't like it. I have to evaluate what goes first. Can the guys double up in trucks etc. before letting someone go.

I don't know if unions are valuable or not anymore. I don't want to start a debate on that. The spirit of the post was keep a job or whine about what you think is fair. In my opinion, it is better to keep people working than letting people go.

please explain that to me? the union did not sign their paycheck. and yes i worked union most of my life but never depended on them for or to keep my job
