What powder were you thinking about using; I have used IMR 3031 in the past but have some Red dot I want to try when the weather gets a little better.
I have both the new and an older Lyman cast manuals.

I read an interesting article on what was called The universal Load in 30 cal. It was 13 gr of red dot with the bullet you are speaking of. Matter of fact it mentioned the same load for both cast and jacketed. Try googling universal load. I think but am not sure it was by a feller by the name of C E Harris

Assuming a gas checked an lubed cast bullet and you've some knowledge of loading cast bullets try 28 gr 4895 with a 1/2 gr dacron filler.

Alliant Reloader No.7 is one of the best powders for 30 cal cast bullets.  SR-4759 is also good.

172gr Lyman 311041 Alliant RL-7 21gr 1,685 fps
174gr Lyman 311291 Alliant RL-7 24gr 1,855 fps

173gr Cast w/gas check IMR SR-4759 19.5gr 1847 fps
