How will rising gas prices affect you?
« on: March 03, 2011, 04:30:37 AM »
Right now I live on base and drive about 3 miles to work (can't walk due to security fence).  Once I retire (end of June) I have the possibility of continuing to live on base for up to a year.  If I get a job here on base, I may very well stay in my current quarters just because of the extreme cost of driving to and from work if I move 20 miles out in the country.  $3.50 to $4.00 a gallon or more starts to weigh heavily on the pocket book.  Really considering a hybrid or all electric too.  If I live on base, I don't pay utilities and I could charge an all electric for free.   The farthest we drive is about a 35 mile round trip to check on our horses.  Sure would like to be able to drive to work and all around base for free...  I see some of the units on base driving all-electric neighborhood vehicles.  Might look into that too and see if it is a possibility.

Its 18 miles to the wife's job, 35 miles ti the university for our son, and 22 miles to the Gym where I go for physical therapy every day.  Looks like I might start riding a bike more this summer.  It's three miles into North Pole, might do more shopping in North Pole.  Hate that, North Pole is one of three cities in the state that has a sales tax.

Rising gas prices have already affected all the things we purchase here in the Interior of Alaska.  Nothing is produced here and it all has to be shipped in.  Noticed yesterday sodas have gone to over $2.00 each.  Hostess SnowBall $1.89.  Gasoline $4.05 at Sourdough fuel in North Pole.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"

The true cost of higher fuel prices isn't realized by how much gas you burn in your own vehicle.  That's barely a drop in the bucket.  It's effects are felt through the rising prices we pay in consumables.  Even if you walk or ride a bicycle for transportation your savings will be minimal and will go almost unnoticed compared to increased prices for food, clothes and everything you spend money on.

An all electric car at a cost of let's say $30,000, which isn't out of line, even if operated at a cost of nothing to power it seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.  How much gas can you buy for 30 grand?  We won't even mention repair costs and unbelievable insurance costs.

So, how will rising fuel prices change me personally?  About the same as a change in the weather since I can't control that either.

Well yesterday i spent at the two supply houses I buy my water well supplies at.Looks like every thing has or is going up 8-15 %.Gas here jumped up to $3.29 this morning.I'm going to have to go up on my service call base rate.Probably $5.00.I'm still the cheapest on service calls and hourly rates.Product is going to go up around 20%.Has too.I've talked to a couple of the other guys and they're going up too.My van gets about 15MPH so that'll mean when I get busy here in few weeks I'll be spending $150-$250 a week just in gas.My bottom line isn't that great any way.I'll just have to see how things shake out.I have to make my two nickels or i wont be around to do the work.

I only drive maybe 400 miles a month if that. Doubt I'll change much. This hunting season might be  a bit spendy though.

I am finally at the point in my life where I can pretty much afford it even though I do not like it so it will not change my driving habits to speak of. It does not feel right though to pay over $20 to fill my motorcycle. Between my wife and I we put in around 50K miles a year. Also have quite a bit of additional gas usage in the summer for the tractor and mowers. My cars get 30+ mpg and I use a small Nissan PU when needed. My old IH 350 tractor is quite thrifty compared to some of the newer stuff.

Back in 2008 during the last $4+ spike in gas prices I remember it was hard to get live shrimp for fishing because it was too expensive for the boats to go out.  Paying $75 a week for gas was no fun either. I've changed some of my hunting grounds to be closer to home. Same for fishing spots. Buying mail order instead of driving around to shop has been another change, and buying closer to home. I used to go into downtown 20 miles away. Haven't seen it in years.

I'm seeing people lined up at the ATM at gas stations today. When I asked about it, I was told that people needed to get cash because there's a $75 limit on credit card pay at the pump purchases. Those folks needed more cash so they could finish filling their tanks.

Buy a Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, or a Honda Fit.  I just buy less gas.

Summer means the Mustang comes out, it gets near double the mpg of the Expy. Fewer trips to "town" mean a bit more shopping in our small town as well as dining here in town. Honestly the restaraunts here are pretty good and just lack the wider variety of Mankato.

The $5.00-$10.00 shipping cost on internet purchases is starting to look like a bargain when burning $3.50 gas. I do my best to help local business but might come a day it slips to simple math work.

Those who think they are well off enough to buy gas may need to rethink the cost of medical, food, clothes and every other product going up . Its not what goes in the tank its what goes out the pocket !  ;)

Just remember we will all get stuck for the hidden cost of diesel they will pass on to us for delivery of goods to your friendly local malmart store.

Being an " Old Fud" I was taught that food, clothing and Shelter was the main concern in life. Then, you bought your Toys, if any Money was left. Now, it seems that Toys are bought usually on Credit,  first then Food Clothing and Shelter!! I think a turnaround is in the works....

some will learn some valuable lessons  when the money gets tight

others will still be   poor  and live on that financial edge

ALL THEIR ENTIRE LIFE

i wonder how many  smokers complained about the cost of gas

i  hope this triggers inflation
and then a raise in the minimum  wage
so  i can jack  up peoples rent....and  make more money

money  is  like air.....its not that  important.....until you run  out
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs

This price increase will change my life a bit. Gonna have to dump the 15 mpg truck for a 30 mpg car. Thats gunna be a big change. Ive never not owned a truck. I drive 1000 miles a mth for work. I have a fuel oil furnace here at home. Wont need anymore this year. We,ll see about the prices next year.. My corn burner heated my house for the most part , but I still used 300 gallons this year. fuel prices on top of the 15% pay cut coming soon, is gonna make it tight around here for sure. I was able to let my wife stay home with the kids till now. But with this economy she,ll have to start looking for something part time. Just have to adjust & hang on. We had pinto beans & corn bread & pork chops for dinner tonight. The kids didnt care to much for the beans . But I told them to get used to it. Gonna be seeing that more often. My mom fed 7 kids on a whole lot less money than we have today. Big plus tonight was my daughter told me she like my cornbread better than grampas. That made me feel pretty good. I dont see this economy getting any better anytime soon. So alot of changes that are taking place for me anyways are gonna be long term..
Bigger garden, growing veggies that store well, chickens in the yard, for meat & eggs are saving me money. grow out a couple pigs every year will save me some money. The pork chops we had tonight was the first meat my wife has bought at the grocery store in 6 mths. besides turkey suasage once a week. I would suspect my family is doing better than the average family of 5 here in Michigan. Plus we,re eating pretty healthy. Couple deer in the freezer, fresh chickens & eggs. Hell, this bad economy may be the best thing thats happened for us ;D ;D. All you can do is keep on keepin on. Sorry for the rambling boys. Its been a long week.

Trips will be well planned...All the honey dos will be done on one run to town...Going to town every day will be stopped...Gas is on its way to $5.00 a gallon...And heating fuel will be on the increase also, I'm going to have to make some changes on the heating fuel for my house...I now live on a fixed income and my money just isn't there anymore...I may have to start back to work part time...

I drive in the neighborhood of 800 miles a week for work.  I'll probably have to do some rearranging of my schedule to maximize those miles.  The wife drives 40 miles a day for her job.  It will mean less trips for fun and to see the kids.  I guess it is a blessing that we don't have any grandkids yet.  The first nice weekend we get will be spent putting new sparkplugs in my car too.  Plenty of ways to cut back if we look hard enough and she puts the blessing on them. ;D  I'll grow a bigger garden, can more produce, probably raise some butcher chickens and add more rice and beans to the menu.

If you have a truck that is paid for and it gets 15 mpg . How much savings can a 30 mph car afford if you have to buy it ? Say you buy a nice used car for $10000.00. That would give you 2500 gal of fuel at 4 dollars a gal. or 37500 miles . To do the same with the new car it will cost you $15000.00 . Depending on length of time cost will be up it might be better to keep the truck. Something to consider .......

Unfortunately the wife and I have pretty long commutes to work, 31 miles and 26 miles respectively,  between the two of us we drive over 550 miles a week just going to and from work.   So gas prices do have a big affect on discretionary spending.

Running errands such as grocery shopping, hardware store runs and the like will be more carefully coordinated so as to reduce the number and frequency of trips.    No more golf or movies at the theaters unless deep discounts come available and more recreational time will be spent doing free or inexpensive activities like canoeing, fishing, and picnicking at the local park or lakes.  The .22 rimfires will see a lot more action than the centerfires.  Eating out will be cut back even further although we don't eat out often as it is due in part to my wife's dietary restrictions because of food allergies and lactose intolerance.

We also just purchased an 08' Toyota RAV4 that get's around the same mileage as my wife's 03' PT Cruiser.   She is driving it now, I am driving the PT Cruiser and my gas guzzling Dodge truck will only be used for hauling trash, yard work and toting the canoe on the weekends.  The PT Cruiser and the Dodge truck both have well over 150,000 miles on them so a replacement was about do anyway.

I think that whatever gains the country may have made in the economy will be squashed if gas prices continue to rise unchecked.   No one is getting pay raises but the costs of everything will continue to go up with fuel prices.   The increased costs of living coupled with stagnant incomes means everyone will have to tighten their belts to some degree, further stifling the economy.

Get ready boys, we are in for a rough road ahead.

Ive been fighting that battle in my head & wallet for about a year now. The trucks paid for but its got 185ooo mile on it. Ive been sinking money into over the last 4 mths or so. just to keep it on the road. If I do go to a higher gas millage car it will be a 5000 dollar car. Pay cash for it, Or if I say spend 10,000, end up with a payment. I ll break even on . But I ll have a car that I ll be able to put another 100,00 miles on. We,ll see.

It affects me because I drive back and forth to work each day, not a long ways, but it will affect me because I put myself on a budget so I will drive less when not in work.  My wife had me take her to a motorcycle place so she could set on a honda rebel, she thinks maybe she would drive to work and back on that in the warm months.  Traffic would be kind of heavy on her way in, no traffic on her way home.  So she's looking at Craigs list for used honda rebels now, I kind of hope it wears off, I don't want her to be crunched on a bike.  I road those for years, had a few close calls.  If she gets one of those, I'll be hoping on and riding it sometimes too though  ;D....smaller than I'm used to, but what the heck, might be fun sometimes and save some gas.

Right now, on a weekend, it is nothing for me to drive my 15mpg Jeep 300 miles for stupid stuff. That will stop. I have Amazon Prime and can pretty much mail order 75% of what I might routinely buy by driving around. That will start. I have 3 motorcycles that carry minimum liability insurance. They get used for going 2 miles to the diner or maybe 10 miles on local dirt roads. Might up the insurance and use them for highway.
