Sheffield Carbon steel knife by A.Wright
« on: March 03, 2011, 06:28:51 AM »
Hi All,

This one arrived in the mail this morning:-

Stacked leather washer handle with some coloured hard rubber and brass for decoration.

Plain carbon steel to an old design. Blade is 3/16" (0.190") thick and 4 3/4" (4.790") long from guard to tip.

With a bit of simple file work to the spine.

I have been looking for a similar knife for several years now to replace the old Wade & Butcher "Boone" that was stolen. The sheaf that came with it is a simple imitation leather one so a new one made of decent leather for the knife will be made by a local chap at the local archery club.

Since the photo was taken I have just taken the very tip of the clip point off so it's less likely to catch the rumen etc when gralloching deer. Best bit is this knife only cost £25 ($40 US) so if I happen to lose it it's not a major event.

Nice, and should last many years!!!
Beware of the man that carries a single shot rifle, because there won't be any warning shots!!!

Thank you. It's a simple design that of course is not fashionable today what with the rat tail tang instead of a full width tang. However for my cutting needs it will be perfectly OK after it's a knife not a pry bar. I am still not quite sure about the tapered grip the knife this replaces had a more even one as you can see here:-

The grip is a more even shape and was comfortable in the hand, the jury is still out on this one.

This one was stolen by the leather worker who was contracted to make a new sheath for it.

I am wondering if Wrights might not be able to match the grip profile of the old Wade & Butcher. Perhaps a call to the supplier of this one might provide an answer.

Nice design Brit...I agree with straightening the up sweep of the point as well and maybe a redesign of the handle like your other knife.  Nice find.

Nice knife.  The reverse handle taper is a bit different.  It often(not always) runs the other way, presumably so it can provide more material for the "weak fingers"..the ring and pinky.  That pommel gives some control though, so it probably works well.  I do like that grip on the Boone.

Thanks I am glad that I am not alone on my thoughts on this. It will be a while before I can move on this upgrade as I have other projects to finish and finance first.

Both of those are nice knives.  Sorry to hear about your Boone, those are very hard to find nowadays.  I've always liked that style of knife.
