Finding out what Hollywood did the Grisham's Runaway Jury spoiled the book for me, and prompted me to email everyone in the business of that movie of my distaste for it. The adversary in the book, tying to buy the jury's verdict by lying, coercing, harassing and threatening the jury etc. was a big Tobacco conglomerate. Hollywood, of course, changed it to a big Gun Company....

I seldom like to go to movies based on books I've enjoyed, more often then not, they are disappointments. There are a few exceptions, the "Godfather" was one.

One thing I find that is funny is that usually after an author gets a movie "made" (mangled) from his book, he writes a book about hollywood and the characters are mostly sleazy bozos which I'm sure are based on his experiences.

Hollywood has a tendency to spoil young actors just as Washington spoils young politicians. Well, I think maybe the politicians are spoiled before they get there. We have a lot of local politicians who are terrible. I've seen actors go to Hollywood who were pro-life and pro-gun Republicans and turned out to be sorry liberals after the Hollywood crowd got through with them. They get a taste of fame and are pressured to be more liberal to get the parts in the big movies. Most of the directors are gun hating, baby hating liberals.

I'm not sure of your assessment of Hollywood actors. While I'm sure alot of them are left leaning when they arrive, just because that is the culture of the career they chosen, and some do acknowledge conservative beliefs, I wonder how many are just playing another part. Think about it, the industry is basically controlled by liberals so if you acknowledge that you believe otherwise you are ostrasized. I think it must be akin to being in college. There you have a faculty made up of liberals who are judging you based on your ability to spew back their version of reality. If you don't you're screwed. If you happen to have conservative beliefs you better keep them to yourself. A real case of "double think".

I have to admire the few actors who have voiced conservative beliefs.

I remember when I was in college and I had an athiest philosophy teacher. He would give you a hard time if you challenged him. I did pretty good on my final paper though. I wrote on the reasons God has to exist. I guess he felt sorry for the poor old "misled" religious guy. I've got a book he wrote and there are some pitiful things in there. I feel sorry for those who believe we evolved from monkeys. If we came from animals, there is no moral law. Those who believe this start acting like animals, hence the culture we live in now. There are very few in the media and Hollywood who hold to any Christian conservative beliefs. I agree with you that some just play along to keep their career, but that is kind of what Judas did.

Be careful what you wish for. When I took Philosophy it was from a guy who claimed to believe in the Bible, literally, word-for-word. He would absolutely not teach any atheist philosophers teachings even though this was a secular school . He believed that he was going to hell because his anscestors owned slaves. I guess because he figured he was going to hell anyway, he lived in a comune with his 17 year old girlfriend. He was in his 50's at the time. My best friend at this school was a guy with very right-wing beliefs who happened to have long hair. I on the other hand had short hair even though this was the early seventies. My buddy got invited to the comune which is why I know about the girlfriend. My buddy got A's from this guy. I got C's. The work was all subjective in nature, reports etc. One time I showed my buddy a paper I was baout to turn in. I asked him what he thought of it. He said, "it's all there, you've hit all the points". I got a C he got an A.

In case I've offended anyone by this:

A. I don't care what someone believes. I happen to believe that there are things in the Bible that are metaphors as in parables. If you believe the Bible is a literal text through and through have it your way.

B. I'm not an atheist but not teaching atheist philosophers in a philosophy class is like not teaching about communism is a political science class because you are an ardent believer in democracy.
