This gets me every time
« on: March 04, 2011, 02:32:44 PM »
As a Youth My first vehicle was a 1972 Pontiac catalina with a 400cid engine the oil change was straight forward the oil filter was as one should look
My nex was a 1977 Chevy Montie Carlo 350cid also uses a adiquate sized oil filter
then the 1980 F150 300cid its oil filter was respectable
The oil filters for the above emntioned vehicles useally measured 3" in diameter and 5" long
Work has 2 trucks one a ford ranger with a 4.9 Liter and a F350 with a 7.2Liter both use the same size (dimure) oil filter.
I just changed the oil on a 2010 Chevy 2500HD the 6.0Liter engine uses a oilfilter that 2.5" in diameter and 3"deep ?? am I missing something, the engines are bigger and the filters smaller today than 30 years ago? the oil filter looks like it belongs on a 4stroke outboard motor instead of a 3/4ton truck.

sure have to agree with you there. What ive done is take the original and bring it in to the local napa store my buddy owns. He lets me go in the back and go through them till i find a bigger one that will work. most any chev filter will fit any chev motor in the same year range. I thought it was kind of comical that the filter for my 4cyl jeep was about 4 times the size of the one for my v8 chev.

could it be the cleaner gas and better air filtration?
maybe the new filters trap and hold more particles.
since I seldom go off road, my oil still looks good when it's changed.

The oil filter will drop right in a coffee mug and not protrude above the rim, A oil filter for a V-8?!

My VW Jetta 2.5 Liter uses 6 quarts of oil and has a canister filter.  Not too bad but it's a little hard to get to.  My 2010 F150 uses 7 quarts and the filter is normal sized but is almost impossible to get to for a change.  What do the engineers think of when they design an engine?  Come on, I'd pay an extra $100 on the price of the vehicle if they'd just put in a remote filter that was easy to get to and easy to change.  Making it not drip or gush used oil on the block would be nice too.

Modern engines run much cleaner.  Some of it, as already stated, has to do with better air filter mediums.  Most of it has to do with engine management systems that simply don't allow for the formation of the abrasive crud that older engines produced.  Add to that the thinner oil in many newer vehicles (due to tighter manufacturing tolerances) and the much better blends of additives in modern oil and the filtration system no longer needs to be sized to collect a trash can's worth of big gritty particles.

That said, my oldest son and I collect military vehicles, mostly bigger stuff, that gets worked pretty hard on our farm, in our construction business and off road.   Our medium and heavy trucks (and my F-350) are running either remote bypass oil filters or oil centrifuges for better filtration.  Even with the older multi-fuel deuce and a halfs and the 230-400 HP Cummins engines the oil is still clear at oil change time...

Two of our multi-fuel trucks don't see the highway and live off road.  They run on filtered waste motor oil and hydraulic fluid and still have clean motor oil.

Remote bypass filters are available for many pick-up truck and Jeep applications and they are cheap engine insurance.  They filter a tiny bit of oil at any one time but do it to a much small particle size.  Over a period of time all the oil gets filtered to a much cleaner state than a standard filter can provide.  Most tap a small amount of the pressurized oil and return it by gravity and are pretty easy to mount.
