Whoo boy this is a flashpoint sort of topic, worse than politics in some circles.

Yes I have heard of it, the general idea is using a certain product that claims to season a barrel like a cast iron skillet. It is also good natural lube. However since you will most likely be shooting sabots out of your in-line and it is not recommended to shoot sabots with lube. If you read your manual it will most likely tell you under no circumstances are you to use lube with sabots.

That would leave you having to clean the product out of the barrel throughly before shooting. As a storage product some people have had good success and other have had issues with rusting.

To sum it up, stick with a good modern cleaner such as CLP or some other petroleum based product and you will do just fine.

seasoning your bore with bore butter is a complete and total joke.

If you want to actually do some good to your bore you can use around 60 strokes of JB Bore polishing paste, clean it out and follow up with a good oil to protect is against rust. And not bore butter.

T/C has made millions off people with that BS. The best thing you can do for your barrel, is throw that BB in the trash, because you can't "season" modern steel like cast iron. Clean your barrel good, then protect it with a good oil like Eezox, Break Free CLP, or Montana X-treme.

When I was new to muzzleloading I read the manual that came with my 209 X 50 and believed what it said about bore butter.  After thoroughly scrubbing my bore with hot soapy water I coated the inside with LOTS of bore butter.  Did the same thing a week later.  Had the water hot enough that I needed hot pads to hold it.  I was in the military at the time stationed overseas.  I put the gun back in my safe and off I went for six more months.  Came back to find pits in the bottom of the barrel.  There aren't many and it doesn't affect accuracy but now I use break free after cleaning the gun I haven't had rust again for 9 years.  Some swear by it and others swear at it.  I use it to lube bullets and patches but will never trust it to protect my gun.

X2 for me!  About 10 years ago, I was trying to "season" a Black Diamond per TC recomendations.  It would shoot all over the place for around 20 shots and then would settle down and drive tacks.  Very frustrating.  Quit using BB and JB'd the bore and had a shooter from there on out.  I shoot a lot of maxi's out of my TC Hawken and so it gets BB'd any way.  It's a bear to get all that stuff out, but the barrel is getting "seasoned", like it or not.  Me and my best friend went to Cabelas a few years back and they had a TC rep there and he told us DON'T use BB.  It traps moisture under it and will cause pitting.  A light coat of oil for storage and a totally dry barrel for shooting is working really well for me.

Leave the "seasoning" in the kitchen. I too many years ago believed that B.S. about "seasoning" a barrel and using no petrol based lubes, or cleaners. After a thorough scrubbing, and rinse, of hot soapy water, I dried my barrel with patches, and then used a hair drier to heat, and dry the barrel. I would put Bore Butter on a patch, and it would melt, and flow into the barrel. next time I took the ML out to shoot,- 2 weeks, when I wiped the bore, before initial loading, sure enough rust was present. I now use a good CLP, Clenzoil, and no more rust problem- at all !! Oh and guess what, Clenzoil is a petro based product, a big no-no if you believe the Bore Butter B.S. I will continue to use good petro based products, when I  put my ML away after shooting. Leave the Bore Butter to lube Maxi-Balls, and nothing else.

hmmm  interesting, I have been using bore butter since I started with a smokepole 3 years ago.  Didn't really care for the seasoning bit, but used it after cleaning to "oil" the bore more or less, also used it for lubing lead slugs.  Still have the same tube I started with, and no rust in the barrel,  but I guess I might just start using regular gun oil,  still probably use it for the lead slugs though.
