Ratdog the 40's were made as a stand alone gun also. the kit came later after they stopped making the gun itself.

Why not a PF9 if you have the stuff to reload?

I have a Kel-Tec P40 and like all Kel-Tec's a fluff and buff is mandatory!  Mine feeds and fires everything I put through it.  The P40 is definitely a hand full!  Recoil is pretty stout!  Kel-Tec stopped producing them because of the recoil and the fact that most people had a tendency not to lock their wrist when firing the P40.  This caused a lot of the problems of FTF.  Slide and barrel conversion kits were produced for the P11 which is the same receiver as the P40.  Conversion kits pop up for sale occasionally for around $200.  P40 magazines are still available and I think Kel-Tec still sells them also.  They also produced a P357 sig conversion which uses P40 magazines.  I have one and like it better than the P40.

It's pretty hard to beat the P-11 with its 10 round magazine + one in the chamber.  It's very reliable once you get it "broken in" and it is small enough to be easily concealed on my hip in an Uncle Mike's belt-holster stoked with +Ps.  I don't shoot the +Ps very often since Kel-Tec warns the P-11 is "ok" for just "occasional use" with +Ps and the "occasion" will be if I need to use it for defensive purposes.

I have a great deal more "faith" in the P-11 compared to my P3AT (.380)... but both have their purpose.  The P3AT is great for deep concealment, but its .380 round doesn't have the "punch" of the P-11's 9x19... and I prefer the extra capacity of the P-11 over the single stack PF9.  Like I said before, I believe the P-11 is hard to beat.

Just my 2¢...  :)
